To cycle 4000 miles this year.

At the beginning of the year I set myself a little challenge to cycle 4000 miles in 2015, with luck I should have it done by the end of November,
Just done over 3000 miles, I have a GPS cycle computer, which tracks how many miles I've done.

You should check out Strava (in the apps stores for smart phones). It's a great program for tracking your riding and to compete against yourself and others wherever you ride. I LOVE Strava to keep me motivated.

You know what you should do? When you get close to 4,000 miles, take your camera with your on your trip and when you reach exactly 4,000, stop by the side of the road, wherever you are, and take a picture of the bike, the GPS screen and the landscape around you. Would make a memorable photo for you.

Good luck!

A very good idea :)

I do use strava, my Garmin GPS is linked to it, I have quite a few KOM's, but gettng abit to old to be chasing fastest times. :).

I do use the hybrid bike the most, and use the road bike at weekends.

Yeah that other guy, old, is closing in on me. He just doesn't give up.

Nice job! A goal is a great idea. Maybe we should do that next year.

According to Strava, I've ridden 788 miles so far this year, mostly on my road bike. So, I'll probably hit 1,000-1,100 by the end of the year. Unfortunately this summer we've had a LOT of rain, so riding has been difficult.

A friend of mine rode across the USA, about 3,000 miles in ~50 days (paying a company that does that kind of tour). He took a small camera with him and had hundreds or thousands of pictures from it. He also seemed to be stopping for ice cream at least daily. :) It was inspirational! He and his wife spent the summer working at Yellowstone National Park, and I see on Strava that he's doing all kinds of mountain rides.

This weekend, my wife and I are riding in The Tour de Chocolate Town, a charity bike ride in Hershey, Pennsylvania. We're only doing the 34 mile option, though - I'd hoped to do more this time, but we're just not ready to sit in the saddle for 62 miles. In fact, we're so far behind that 34 miles is probably my longest ride of the year. (Last year we did a 48 mile ride as 'training' before the Tour.)

What Garmin do you use? We both have 510s and, up until recently, we were pretty happy with them. But a recent software update has meant that they've started syncing slowly and unreliably. And my wife lost a ride the other day when the Garmin completely reset and lost all of her settings and data, which was pretty frustrating because she thinks she had some new personal records on the ride.

Good luck on reaching your goal and the Tour de Chocolate Town. You should get with @Alan
a
nd get him to get some shots of you riding.

We got our Trek Pure's in 2013 and put over 12,000 miles on them in almost two years. The oil change sticker on my Jeep is from 2013 and I rode more than I drove. Still haven't gotten to the 3000 miles for the oil change.

This past May we bought Trek Shift 3's and have over two thousand miles on them. We kept the Pure's also.

It helps when you're retired, live in Florida and do everything by bicycle, including doctor/dentist visits.

By luck, we managed to get several pictures of ourselves last year - the local paper interviewed us at the finish line and took a few, and the photographers who were there just to get pictures of the event got a shot of us riding in front of Fahrenheit (a coaster in Hersheypark - the first part of the ride goes through the park). And we took a picture with the costume character Chocolate Bar after the ride, of course. :)

This year I plan to use the GoPro during the ride, but of course that's point-of-view rather than of us. I would like to get pictures of us riding.

Yeah, that helps. :) We have road bikes (an old Cannondale 2.8 for me, a Giant for my wife), and hybrids (Giant Escape 1 for me, and a Schwinn for my wife). We usually ride the road bikes, but there are times when the hybrid is the way to go.

A friend of mine rides from the town we live in to work fairly regularly (a few days a week; it's 22 miles via car using the highways, so a bit more by bike). One of these days I'm going to commute with him that way...

I just use a basic garmin edge 200, which does the job, I did use strava on my phone last year, but I do like using the gamin, so simple to use, and not let me down so far.

Cool. Garmin must have seen my complaining - a new app update yesterday seems to have fixed the issues. ;)

14 miles today. Tomorrow, 33 miles!

A little update, done the 4000 miles today, the weather has been quite good for the last 2 months, so I have been going to work a little early to do a few extra miles(and take a few pictures on the way)
