Any Other Migraine Sufferers?

I've had migraines all my life, but in the last six months or so it has really gotten bad. I've had quite a few this summer that have been so bad I was completely debilitated for a full day. The pain is off the scale. I'm seeing a new doctor, a neurologist, in a few days. I'm looking for any and all info I can find though. Anyone here who has found a treatment or preventative measure that has worked for you, I'd love any info you might have.

Makes it hard to edit pictures on the computer when I can't even stand up straight. :)

I feel for you Woody, I'm sorry you have them chronically. I'll get a debilitating one once every 3-6 months and it's about the most horrible thing ever. I can't imagine getting them any more frequently than that. The only thing that seems to slightly help me (I'm still testing the theory) is smoking a cigar, I think the huge rush of nicotine somehow helps it.

Hope your new doctor can help you with them.

My wife was getting 4 or 5 a month. They got really bad when she crossed that 35 year mark. For about 8 years now she takes Imitrex (sumatriptan) 100 mg pills. It works great for her. She feels it coming, pops the pill and it almost always prevents it. If she is late with the pill, she might take a short nap while it works if she is home. Its a limited drug on most plans, one pack of 9 each month. It is now generic though, so $10 on our plan.

We've heard that some people get zonked out and can't stay awake with Imitrex, but my wife feels nothing but better. Not drowsy, spacey or dizzy she just loves it. That was the first thing the doc tried, so no experience with anything else.

Interesting. There could be some science behind that cigar. I'm pretty sure my wife's Imitrex works by giving a big serotonin rush. I think nicotine boosts your serotonin as well, that's why its addictive. Lot's of feel-good in that smoke. I don't smoke, so I'm just going by stuff I've read.

Identify the trigger.For me loud sounds,direct exposure to sun and temper.Also I need to eat every 4-5 hours.Eat well and stay mentally relaxed.Helped me reduce the occurances.I have been on homeopathic meds
I placed an icepack instead of the peas once.it helped a bit.All natural so no harm in trying.
Try to regulate food intake and some mind calming exercises.Find your triggers and work on them

Sorry to hear that, those of us that have never had one cant understand how bad it is,worked with some one once who told me his was triggered with chocolate,but he still ate it occasionally and got migraines,couldn't understand him doing it.

When I came down with Ménière's syndrome, which is accompanied by a lovely migraine, I've been on Betahistine for months.

If besides migraine you also suffer nausea, dizziness (or in specific when suffering tinnitus), it might not be bad to have you tested for Ménière.

I get migraines. They used to be vry frequent, but these days they seem to be more "stress related" i have a "stash" of imigran (sumatriptin) nasal sprays, which are the most awful things, but they really work! A quick rest, and I can bear to be in a lit room again.

I saw a neurologist a couple of weeks ago. Suffered with migraines for the last 35 years or so. I was prescribed 75mg Pregabalin at bedtime. I'm hoping this works. I take 2.5mg of Naratriptan if I have a migraine then try and get some sleep. I know exactly what you're going through. Good luck with whatever you're neurologist suggests.

Thanks for the ideas, guys. After having them all my life, I've heard many of the things of what you are suggesting, but I hadn't heard of the grape juice idea. The feet in warm water and ice on the back of the head will definitely be worth a try!

Imitrex worked for me for a while a few years ago, but lost its effectiveness. I use Maxalt now and sometimes it helps, but it doesn't stop the migraine, just makes a 9 in pain got to an 8 or so. :)

I think the cigar would make me even sicker, 10 Gauge. LOL.

I also hadn't heard of
Pregabalin, so I'll check with my doc on that.

I know many triggers, but they are inconsistent. Sadly, alcohol is one of them, as are lack of sleep, missing meals, dehydration, allergy season, and of course stress. Right now, they just come no matter what I do.

Thanks for the ideas and support, guys. If you have any other info, fire it on up here. It might help us all out.

In the past I read something about the use of energy drinks like Red Bull to combat cluster headaches. Not sure if it helps against migraine.

I don't suffer from them and if I had any suggestion it would be to see a really good homeopath or naturopath.
best of luck - I couldn't think of anything worse than suffering from these things on a regular basis.

Too bad Red Bull wasn't around when I was having cluster head aches. I'll never forget how those felt.

I occaisionally have migraines ranging from minor ones I can fight through to ones that put me down for 4-6 hours. However I consider my issues mild compared to what others go through. Over the years, I've been able to identify what can trigger them: Not eating regularly & timely (need something about 5-6 times a day); Not sleeping well; Stress; Eye strain from too much computer time; Getting my body clock off schedule. I often crave caffeine during a migraine and feel somewhat chilled. Any needed medication is over-the-counter and taken as per the directions. I also lay down in a dark room and wear an eye mask.

I've suffered with them the last 10-15 years. They are less frequent now and I nearly know straight away how bad they will be. Some I can work through but when they are bad I can't do anything but go to bed and cover my eyes. Feel ill, sometimes vomiting, it will last a full day.

Mine never seem to come on during the day. I wake up in the morning with the symptoms. It's a weird one to describe. It not intense pain but it feels like someone has kicked you in the head and you are a bit disorientated. Gets worse and worse. Really bad ones have me laid up in bed for two days.

I I drink lots of water now and make sure I don't go too long without food, which seems to help.
