So if a big name person or band came to town for a show or concert, does the city

a. block off part of the street so the high-$ production can park their tour busses or
b. jack up the parking rates?

Crap! I should have known there would be a down side to owning good gear! I wonder if the amount of people made it worse, in the way of looking like a pro set up! Just when I was thinking these meet up groups was a good thing, it seems they are being seen as commercial groups! :(

Thanks buddy for sharing this with us! I'll have to be careful to keep my gear that is showing down to a minimum!

I've been to more than one concert/festival where any camera with interchangeable lenses is deemed professional and therefore prohibited. It doesn't matter what the camera is, if you can change lenses you can't take it into the venue.

Concerts are usually held on private property, and owners of such can set whatever rules they please. The OP links to shooting on public land.

I think this is a large part of it. If it were just a photographer and a model, nobody would probably notice or care. Being in a group of people setting up pro gear? Suddenly you look like a production company.

I filled out Form 1040 Super EZ for my income taxes this year. It only has two lines on it.

1. How much money did you make last year? $___________
2. Send it in!

I know, the point I was making is that many times people automatically assume that a DSLR and associated equipment means professional, when most of the time that is not the case.

I know many locations have restrictions when photos are produced for commercial purposes. A permit also ensures that you have a predefined space all to yourself and making sure nobody trips on your eqpt. If I am tourist and someone is hogging a vantage point because he is doing a shoot I will be pissed. This is lack of definition and poor implementation of regulations.
