Hey @Blacktop here are some of those very first photos I tried with flash, before joining this great forum.

All took with my Nikon D80

Okay. Flash needs to be off the camera or higher. TTL at weddings as far as I am concern is hit or miss because of other type of ambient lighting, white dress etc. So need to learn how to use a flash in manual mode. When I started it was #5 bulb and 24 exposures, egad I dated myself at least no flash powder! Electronic flash was a Spiratone that could run AC or 3 or 4 odd 46.5 batteries that could give you a shock. I counted how many feet to take a shot of the brides maids as they came up. 10 feet at F8 with a shutter speed of 1/125 of sec or less depending on ambient light. Now I put the flash on a light stand and use a transmitter mounted on the camera and sometimes the flash is mounted on the camera. Useless for ceilings over 12 foot remember that!

Thanks I have done more since this last one and this was just to show that we all have to start from somewhere.

Why did you choose f11, 1/30?

That one of the cakes on the table was probably used as a background spread (10in x 20in) in a wedding album. I'd have to go back to which lens its either an Olympus 11-22 or a Sigma 18-55 F/2.8 (sorry did not have the Nikons at that time) and more than likely being in manual mode on the flash (subject to flash distance plus using slow shutter for the flash to fire and near end of the shutter). So not knowing what it would be used for I used the best DOF then I have a choice on what I could do with it. AN example a duplicate layer with a Gaussian blur and lower the opacity.

PS I usually use slow shutter to get the ambient light notice of the light on the wood and wall.

Sorry Scott I did not read the full list. Yes we all have start somewhere. I was working full time and did not have a lot vacation or personal time back in the 70's I went to a seminar that Bill Stockwell had in Cleveland Ohio (Do a search of Stockwell, Gunn and Monte Z). It was a Friday, Saturday and Sunday we had models to shoo(bride and groom) and I was using a Mamyia C330 and Nikon FM. I was able to record the sessions with a cassette player so I can view my images that I had taken on those 3 days. I think if Bill was alive today he would be impressed what we could do now. I learned how to sandwiched negative to send to the printer and now we used masks and layers to achieve the same affects.
