Hats Off to Jpeg Shooters

Or I have become a lazy photographer ...

I shot Raw and Jpeg yesterday for a charitable organisation.
The idea was I would simply transfer the Jpegs to a memory stick and hand it over but shot Raw as well ... just in case.

Turns out I am either useless or too fussy but I just could not hand over the Jpegs as shot.

I processed each photo - some took seconds and others took a bit more as I improved them.

Over 350 photos in total and it has taken me the whole day and then some!

All for free - am I mad or what?

I always shoot RAW, means it gives me a reason to look at every photo and pick the best instead of skimming through them, however in a Studio environment I could see how JPEG could be used, if you are always in the same lighting situation you should be able to get the right shots all the time

I have to agree with your there @Daz

My photos in Jpeg (and RAW) were essentially ok but all improved greatly even with basic processing - such as a crop.

I'm embarrassed to admit that some needed straightening too - especially the ones at the end of the 4 hour shoot. :) I must have been leaning over.

Even since I added 'keeping it straight' to my thought process as I shoot, I miss it sometimes. There are so many factors :)

I can really see how JPG works in a situation like that, shooting an event (gathering, party, sports especially) and you need to provide images QUICKLY. It just makes us better shooters IMO.

Glad you shot the event and learned a few things as well :)

I think most all of us have just become more fussy knowing each shot can be improved in Post. I have shot some stuff for family and friends and had to just hand over the photos as shot (time constraints or no computer handy). Each time they were tickled pink with the results, however to me they needed even basic processing. I would show them the processed ones and of course they liked them even better, however the ones given were already out on social media, which is mainly the intended purpose any more.

Just in case you're not aware of it I'll mention you can assign the FN button on your D7100 to display the Virtual Horizon in the viewfinder as an aid to keep your shots level. You find the option under F2 in the Custom Settings Menu. While it's nothing fancy it does work in both Landscape and Portrait mode and it's way better than nothing at all.

Have done that sir but I now need a button in my brain to remind me to check it every time (not just 60% of the time) :)
Its a great feature on the D7100

Having processed these photos I thought I would show some samples.
The ones i give to them will not have my watermark on - not sure if that was a good decision or not.
I guess maybe not from a marketing point of view but they can get hold of me if they really want to.

The first shot is the lady assigned to helping me. She had the list of over three pages of "photos required" that we had to work through. She was a lot of fun.
