2 Cyclones in Australia

We have 2 cyclones bearing down on our coastline, both due to hit land early tomorrow morning.

Cyclone Lam in the Northern Territory, on the map Scott Murray lives at Jabiru, so not far from the action.
Hopefully it won't do too much damage wherever it does end up hitting.
I will be heading in to work at 3am, I think I will take the camera with me .

And Cyclone Marcia, This one is off the Central Queensland coast, just out from Mackay where I am.
They have been saying all along it is expected to hit land between Yepoon and Gladstone, but as you can see today it has been heading more towards Mackay.

The one that is hitting Qld (TC Marcia) is going to hit land and travel south to northern NSW where I live (abt 650km from landfall). The estimated rainfall for us starting tonight and thru to Saturday night is somewhere between 300 & 600mm (or 12 to 24 inches). The last time we had rainfall that intense in 2013, we had some major flooding. The difference this time is we have had rain almost every day in the last month and the ground is totally saturated. Our local river has already risen 1m and the rain hasn't really started yet. We have had light rain all day.

I'll be out with my camera (just the P&S tho) :D

The TC hitting up near Scott is at a higher category ATM, but population affected will be far far less than the one hitting Qld, and so, of course the one hitting Qld is getting 95% of the press.

I hope all is OK for you Brad. I'm sure you've been here before more than once, but still, you never know what is going to happen. Take care..... and take some good photos ;)

Thanks for the thoughts Vixen. We'll be OK, my house is protected somewhat from the wind by the hills that surround us.
I have spent most of my 50 years in North Queensland, I have sat through probably about a dozen cyclones. Though down here in Mackay I wouldn't have expected to be looking at a Cat 4 cyclone heading our way, usually they have lost intensity by the time they get this far down, but this one is only just starting to hit its straps.

It's worth mentioning that our cyclone category system is slightly different to the US one. I think the Aust system has higher wind strength.

Lets hope it doesn't get to Cat 5.

Where I live we are getting a double whammy of rain. We have the tropical monsoon affecting us at the moment and that is bringing our current rain. I'm pretty sure the tropical monsoon doesn't normally come this far south. Then in a couple of days the remains of the cyclone will hit us bringing some more heavy rain. Could be an interesting few days for Scott, Brad & myself. I am in no danger of flooding as I live 200m up on a hill. Landslide maybe, but not floods. All roads in and out of the village go under tho when the river breaks it's banks.

The only thing I am worried about is trees coming down across my driveway, and not being able to get out in the morning.
The last cyclone that hit our area was in 2009, it took me half a day with a chainsaw to clear my 150 meter driveway.

Cheers Scott.
It has intensified a lot quicker than anyone expected, it has slowed down to 13 kmh movement.

I never would have thought we would see a cat 5 cyclone this far down the coast.

Oh well, I am off to bed for a few hours sleep. Lets see what the morning brings.

You guys take care. Don't take any unnecessary risks. Hope the flooding and wind doesn't do to much damage.

Hope you all come through it intact without any damage, photos should be the last on the list of priorities even if the opportunity arises.

Stay safe

TC Marcia...now Cat 5....still out at sea at present moving in quite slowly
TC Lam.....hit coast at Cat 4 and knocked out all the weather stations up there so no weather info available. Have not yet seen any footage of damage but it's only early morning here so probably won't for a couple of hours yet.

Has rained all night here. Will get heavier later today

Looks like it is the other way around and good to know the upside down Cat 5 is less intense. Plucked this from the BOM website.
