Taking photos of Eiffel Tower at night is illegal

Solution: Find a hotel with a clear view of the tower and try to get a room on the top floor or close to it. This "law/rule" is ridiculous and just plain smacks of greed.

In the article they talk about many buildings across Europe are protected by copyright. In Romania, Bulgaria, and Slovenia, for example, tourists may snap pictures of public buildings, but cannot distribute images for sale.

Glad I live in the U.S. WE can shoot just about anywhere we want as long as we are on public property.

This is what has always confused me about intellectual property rights. The famous HOLLYWOOD sign is a copyrighted work of art, and you cannot put it in an ad or on a movie poster, but you can show it as background in the movie itself. Every building, car, clothing item, etc. is a copyrighted design, but taking a photograph of those things is not automatically a violation of the copyright.

Taking photos of the Eiffel Tower at night is not illegal. Publishing photos of the Eiffel Tower at night (which does not mean uploading them to your Flickr account or Instagram) first requires that you receive permission due to their copyright on the light display, nor can you sell them without paying for said rights. Sort of like doing a cover song. No one is going to sue you in your room, bars are supposed to pay a fee to allow cover bands to play material in their establishments, and artists need to pay for the rights to release a sell a recorded version.

We went earlier in the year and I wasn't arrested. In fact I was surrounded by loads of people taking pictures.
