I have windows 8.1, its does take a bit of getting use to. I just try and keep it simple, and click straight to desktop mode.

There is a add-on called Classic Shell that will make it look and act like the Last Windows with a start menu. I have been using it every since this new APP based look started. Windows 8.1 at its core is really nice once you get the start menu and button back.

I've kinda gotten used to hitting that win button, quickly typing the beginning of whatever I needed to pull up and hitting enter in the search results. Not a huge damper not having that classic start menu, if they didn't shuffle half the bloody setting sub menus.

I have 8.0 on my laptop and really do not like it. Having to go to that huge page full of apps I will never use and cannot seem to delete rather than the usual Start Menu is a PITA
Just right click on the App you do not use and "unpin from the start menu" or uninstall. Easy as

We made a conscious decision to upgrade all the laptops/pcs in our house to w7 just after w8 was released, we didnt want a mix of windows OSs in our house. Hopefully they should all last long enough for the next "decent" version of windows.
