I just realized that I have Picasa installed. If open an image in Picasa then click properties it shows me much more EXIF than my regular Windows photo viewer.

For me, right clicking in windows 7, then properties - details usually tells me what I want to know. I also have IrfanView. You need the plugin package that goes along with it. This also gives you shutter count. Almost anything free you download tries to install crap, so you really have to read each screen carefully to opt out of the junk.

For online, I use FxIF in Firefox for rt clicking and seeing exif.

Another good free app for viewing EXIF data as well as quick and dirty corrections is IRFanview. Be sure to install the plugins from the homepage as well. This is one of those apps that's so good, it's hard to believe it's freeware.

Exif consists of multiple sections, the standard part (ISO, shutter speed, aperture, etc), and a part called Manufacturers Data, which has a lot of the good stuff. Nikon changes this part from time to time, which leaves old unmodified Exif tools worthless (for that part). Also if we use an Adobe program to re-save the image, Adobe strips out this Manufacturers part.

The best Exif tool (it is the ultimate because it is very actively maintained for new cameras) is Exiftool
ExifTool by Phil Harvey

This is a Command Line program, not a Windows GUI program.

However, towards the bottom of that link above, at WINDOWS UTILITIES, is ExifTool GUI For Windows,

ExifToolGUI

Putting it in the same folder as Exiftool (renamed to be without the (-k), and then running it, makes an excellent Windows GUI applicationfor Exif data.
