Because I'm waiting for a volunteer to post it... It's in the works as are the results of the previous one.

I've said this before, and it bears repeating...

Post your own contest. These used to be ran by the community, and there's no reason why they can't be again. I'm certain the mods would be happy to be relieved of the duty of running them.

I really wouldn't mind if the subject would be decided by members...

But it's done now for July.

Nothing preventing other members to post their own at any time and see how many respond.

What I would like is to just have a specified theme but no "winner". I feel that as soon as there is an imposed theme, all participants are winning just by doing their best and comparing themselves with all other members. The whole concept of winners and selection is what makes this harder to administrate.

It cant be easy to pick a topic, there has to be the opportunity for as many members as possible to join in,take the new topic a high percentage of members will have a 50mm lens and those like me that dont can approximate it from there lens range,so it takes a few days to conclude and start again the world will not end due to that.
Letting a winner (i didnt think it was a competition) choose the next subject is highly likley to lead to more restrictive themes,at the moment the mods look to be covering loads of bases with there ideas, its an easy laid back bit of fun i say treat it as that and enjoy.

Sounds like it might be good to suggest subjects. I was trying to have an idea 'bout an easier way to do it, but developed schemers block.

I sometimes go on a 3D forum and the members had put forward a long list of subjects, they did run a competition and had a winner would choose from that list, maybe a list of subject suggestions would help the mods, sorry if i sometimes seam to be defending that side of the team but having been and still being there it can be a crap job with very little thanks but a lot of criticism.

New here, but I also participate on a grilling/BBQ forum where we have contests. Judging has to be done based on pictures and not tastings, but it works well. The winner of each contest chooses the "secret ingredient" for the next. The site admin starts the thread once that decision is made. At the end of the contest period, the admin puts up a poll and everyone votes over a specified time period. Would something similar work here?

I remember when we were doing weekly challenges this way. But at times, the winner would not respond to his task of selecting a new subject. Sometimes he wouldn't respond at all... This is not as easy as it looks.

This idea of Assignment (Challenge) is just a way to get members to grow out of their comfort zone and improve their creativity. There is no money nor trophy to be won. The only real prize is the knowledge and confidence that can be gained from participation. It's only for fun so this shouldn't become the focal point of our Forum.

Maybe if we started a user challenge idea thread it would be easier for us to post them faster. Sometimes its hard for us to come up with something original every month.

I dunno... I kind of like having a "top 5" (or whatever number is chosen) posted, just for the sense that the "winners" get a sense of achievement AND reinforcement that they've created something decent, and the rest get the chance to see and strive! Of course, I'm offering this up from my own personal experience. I've entered quite a few, and actually been in the top 5 in a couple, and even knowing that there is no prize... it was a pleasant feeling of accomplishment knowing that I created something that others thought was done well. Even the times I didn't "win", which have been many, I still felt good about my entries while still being challenged to step it up a notch.

If there is not a goal of "top picks", then it just becomes another "post your xxxxxxxx pics here" thread, IMO.

I look at it kinda like a personal challenge. Can I make 3 photos that I would enter. June was the first challenge that I participated in and I won three times by coming up with three entries. If one of mine would have made the top five, it would have been icing on the cake of the fact that I am the best photographer who's ever lived inside my head. It's a small world (inside my head) but we all know each other here.:)

I'll add my view to this too. June was the first month I *tried* to participate, and even though I didn't come up with anything suitable for posting I had a blast getting out and trying to do shots I wouldn't have thought of otherwise.

I appreciate all the efforts of the team that puts these challenges together.

How can you call it a contest if there is no winner? That's what "Post your (whatever ) shots" is for.

It was billed as an "assignment", not a "contest"

Exactly Mike. The main goal of this Thread was to have people practice photography and share their views with others. The exercice is just that, practice and get better, period. The displayed selected shots are just to let participants know which shots were preferred. In now way was it ever meant to emphasize about one member being "better" than others. We are only looking at pictures and even the selection could at all times be questioned and even a court of law could not justify the selection.

So, take it all with an easy going attitude, try to improve your skills and have fun.
