Backyard Landscaping for Birds and Butterflys

I thought this could be fun and give others some ideas or to try something different in attracting birds and butterflys. I have been landscaping my backyard for the last several years and even though it is work I do enjoy it. I usually spend several weeks (weekends) getting things cleaned up and planted and just getting the yard in good shape over all come spring time. This year was really cold and some plants took for ever just to start coming up out of the ground.

Over the years I have built a small pond and planted various trees along with shrubs and of course flowers both annuals and perinnials. This past winter it got so cold that one of my flowering shrubs ( common name. Silverado Sage ) died and I had to dig it up and I planted a Yaupon Holly in its place.

So I took a few pictures of what was going on. I started a little late on taking pics but anyway I did get a few of the area that I had to clean up and replant my new tree along with cutting my lavender down to the ground as it had grown out of control.

I also took pics of the flowers and shrubs that I have in my backyard along with my pond.
Post up some pictures of areas that you have planted to show others what you are doing or have done.

Here is the area that I replanted my Yaupon Holly tree in and cut the Lavendar back.

Here is my pond. To the left of the pond is 3 Abelia (evegreen) shrubs that flower late spring until fall. Hummers and Butterflys like them.

Here is my flower bed that has the Tangerine vine on the lattice along with some Humming Bird bush Daisy,s, Bearded, Bearded Tongue, Tickseed, Salvia and on one end the Turks Cap.

The other pic shows my Crype Myrtle and some more Abelia bushes just a different variety from the others as well as a Knock Out Rose bush and a planter that has a Butterfly bush planted in it.

I will post some more when things start filling out and growing good. Some of the perinnials won't really fill out until their second year. I still have some pics to post but I am tired so I will do some more later on.

Again I hope others post up what they have done to their yard for others to see.

I have no pond, but I managed to sneak away a small bed in my townhome complex using a loophole in the CC&Rs. Around twenty plants, a mix of CA natives with some drought tolerant exotics thrown in for fun.
