I belong a small group from around the world and we send each other jokes ect, been doing it for years with no problems untill today,i recieved an email with a link to a funny video had hundreds of these over the years with no problems,
Fortunately i run two systems this one is for my photography so i limit its surfing, and an old laptop for things like the joke group, any way i clicked the link as i have many times and firefox froze,a warning came on my screen saying my surfing habits where being tracked and recorded unless i sent them £200 via something called ukash they would report me and my surfing details, they had the wrong ip address and had me in totally the wrong part of the UK.
I don't give a damn to be honest but i wonder how many people get this and send the money, restarted the system as it was the only way to clear it and i do have current McAffee running.

That's a virus. lol. Take everything you need off your hard drive (get a cheap enclosure) and re-format it. My friend got the "You have 2000 viruses, click here to remove them" and he did... and well.. that was the virus. lol.

Fortunately it doesn't matter on the laptop, what made me laugh was it didn't do the buy this to cure your problem, it was just plain blackmail.

Yeah, that sounds like some iteration of ransomware/malware. Some can be very nasty like a recent one called Crypt0l0cker. If that's just an old laptop, like Mfrankfort said, I'd just reload that OS. Good luck.
