New SONY a9

The a9 looks poised to be an amazing, even game-changing release... That being said, I did the math and an a9 with a 24-70mm would set me back well over $7,200.00 (tax included). That being the case, I'll look at the a9 the same way I look at a Testarossa: magnificent performance but not remotely practical for my lifestyle. Clearly the a9 is a fantastic camera that takes great photos, but then... So does my current kit. And that's pretty much where it starts and ends for me.

Couldnt agree more for us mortals :D but at Adorama D5 and 24-70 come out at $8,892 and i think that is sony's target market,we will have to wait until the hype settles and look at real world users to see if its bull poo or the camera can live upto its specs.

The only thing i see it as is an interesting exercise of how far a mirrorless can be taken if money is no or little consequence, health permitting i would rather have a D500 and 200-500,a gifted a9 would be sold by me to fund other gear anyway as it has gone way beyond what i need.

This is their sports camera ... With no native sports lenses ...

The only way you can get super reach lenses for this is by using Canon glass...

Also they dont show how good the AF is when you have multiple subjects and coming towards you, whilst this looks like a beast of a camera, it has not been used by anyone to see what it can ACTUALLY do yet ...

I told my wife about the A9, and even though I have only recently bought the D500, I told her I was gonna buy me an A9. She didn't say no.....she just gave me that look.:unconscious:

Sony marketing department is very good. It has struck everybody with awe, unless we calm down, take a seat, and check the specs with a nice cup of coffee. :)

Sure, A9 is a very good camera, at least on paper until confirmed in real life use. Nevertheless the tech is not groundbreaking. Nikon had 60 fps mirrorless in 2011, the Nikon 1 V1. Sure, much smaller sensor, but larger sensor real estate in itself does not affect frame rate. The A9 is a flagship camera, with specs in the same ballpark as 1D X Mk II and D5. Real life performance remains to be seen.

The fatal problem with Sony mirrorless is the lenses. They are bigger than Nikon counterparts. So, one can have one larger body in the bag with several smaller lenses, or one smaller body and several larger lenses. The Sony approach is brain damaged, imho. They need to fix this.

See yourself, D5 + 85/1.4G and A7RII with 85/1.4GM:

Compact Camera Meter

Lack of lenses, too small a body size, too big lenses, and EVF will not make everybody jump with joy. But new choices are good. So, all in all, thumbs up!

That IS a good point. But then I remind myself if I was to drop $8K on a D5 and lens (oh happy day!) I'd also be buying into the richness of the entire Nikon catalog of lenses, flashes and accessories; and that's a factor I think anyone should consider regardless of how much they're spending. It also touches on my other reason for my waiting out the mirrorless format: the technology is still nascent. As awe-inspiring as the a9 is today, what will mirrorless technology look like in another year? Ugh... It's all just so much "chasing your tail". It makes me happy to see such huge developments with the format, but I'm even happier to be out of the race for now.

Wow... I just saw... it has an ethernet port... and a 1/32,000 sec shutter speed... in-body vibration reduction on a camera that doesn't have a shutter slammin' around and a 1/32,000 speed ought to make for some pretty sharp images... I wonder, is there an F-mount adapter?

So...If Sigma comes out with a 70-200 mm 2.8 ART lens, will you buy it and sell me your Tammy 70-200 at a significant Nikonites discount?

Sony has a native FE mount 70-200 f/2.8 that performs pretty good on the A7R II.

Tony and Chelsey have also test Sony's A7R II with a 3rd party lens adapter to couple Canon lenses to Sony FE mount which they indicate works Ok after a firmware update.

My personal sense of it - Nikon and Canon need to consider this a real threat. The progress Sony has made in a relatively short period of time is remarkable. I know the thread is about the A9, but considering the A7R II is a predecessor for a company that is on an aggressive market path, some comparisons to the A7R II are valid. If actual tests indicate the A9 IQ is good people will take it seriously. The A7R II has a number of issues that I assume would prevent pro's from using it, but I understand thew a9 has addressed a number of those issues.

In some ways it doesn't matter if the new Sony lives up to expectations 100% or not, Sony is a predator that can smell blood and they are hunting Nikon and Canon, ime in the camp that believes Nikon could top them if they choose to but they do have a reputation for not taking the competition seriously until its too late.

I know most dont want to use adapters but if Nikon brought a mirrorless body out DX or FX that gave users the opportunity to buy new lenses and mix in their older ones that would slow Sony down.

I think Canon is going to make that jump, but haven't heard enough to think that Nikon is poised to do that too.

I guess we'll see what Nikon announces next, but I don't see more announcements like the D7500 turning their market share upwards.
