Hi
I thought i had posted earlier but was looking for the thread and couldn't find it. Anyway i am new to Nikon but not to photography, i used to use mainly Canon until 2014 and decided to change brand, i ended up buying a brand new Pentax K-S2 which i have still got and would never part with. In the latter part of 2014 i ordered a used Nikon Camera, Telephoto Lens and a External Flash well Speedlight. A long story short, the Flash and Lens arrived but never got the Camera. I thought sod it and kept the 2 items which i still have. Anyway a week or 2 ago i decided to give Nikon another go and ordered a Nikon D5300 which all being well should arrive tomorrow, i also ordered a couple of 50mm Prime Lenses, 1 for my Pentax and the other for the 5300. I tried finding a UK Forum as i suspect most of you are from the States which isn't a bad thing as i have met a few Americans and have found them to be helpful and friendly. I hope to get to know you all and i will probably have a boatload of questions to ask.
Thanks for reading and allowing me to join this Forum.

Regards
Tim aka LordOdin

Hello Tim, and welcome! Hope to see pictures of your work soon. I have a D5500, very similar to your D5300, so if you have any questions about its operations just fire away. Best of luck with it - it's a very capable bit of kit. Can I ask why you left the Canon universe?

Well my Nikon D5300 arrived earlier and condition actually looks brand new, it didn't have a lens unfortunately but i have my Sigma and a Yongnuo 50mm Prime Lens on the way. I have to say that the weight of it actually surprised me compared to my Pentax and also the Canon's i have used. I am impressed with the overall feel of it though and the buttons are more clicky than other Camera's i have used. Will be having a play with it later. Also in the post i got a SD Card for the Nikon and a 50mm Prime Lens for my Pentax. I also got a Samsung NX1000 Mirrorless Camera which is absolutely Mint Condition, i have always wanted a Mirrorless Camera and it only cost £100 so happy with that too. My Birthday at the end of the month so an early treat. I would of liked the 18-55 kit lens and might look on eBay to see if i can get 1 cheap enough.

Congrats on receiving the new bodies - a very nice birthday present indeed, even if it is self given! I also purchased my D5500 used, and shortly after added the kit 18-55 Nikkor. It really is an excellent match, with a very nice range given that 1.5x crop factor. If I recall, I paid less than $100 USD for mine (used). It seems like the used selection was quite large, as many people obviously look to upgrade once they get the bug. But honestly, that little kit lens has done so well by me that I've not thought of changing it out (the price jump to faster lenses is also a major consideration).

Anyway, best of luck with the new units! I'm interested to see how you think the picture quality and shooting experience differs between the Nikon and the Samsung.

Been playing with the Samsung a bit and to be honest the Auto Focus is a bit of a pain, buzzing in and out every time you move the Camera, think i will keep it in Manual Mode for now lol. I am liking the feel of the Nikon though my Sigma 70-300mm looks absolutely massive on it. I have a Pentax 55-300mm Lens and it's nowhere near the size of the Sigma. I have been looking on eBay for the 18-55mm Lens and some of the prices are way too high and the cheaper ones look a bit rough, i am wanting the VR one which also seems to add quite a bit more on. I have put in a cheeky offer in for one but not heard back yet, it worked when i put one in for the 5300 so hope it does again. I don't normally bid on items and usually go for the buy it now option and pick what i find that's a reasonable price.

Thanks for the Welcome, I just got bored with Canon and wanted to try something new.

I took a similar path as you being a Canon user for many years, but I must say I have enjoyed my decision to switch. I always felt like the D500 was something that Canon couldn't match in the crop body department.

It's been a while since i used a Canon apart from my AE-1 which i do like to dig out and use every now and again. I think i am going to like the Nikon, i do like the Menu's already and i am finding i am liking the Interface as well especially the Aperture Graphic which is great for someone just starting out. I have a few friends who i got into photography and have always recommended Pentax but now i will be telling them to at least look at Nikon. Going to have a nice relaxing evening and have a good look through the Menu's and set it up, i think the last owner must have reset it to default
