Not only don't I know my new camera, I am also lame on the computer! I'm a 74 yr old guy from Vegas, been here about 6 yrs, played ONE game of 21,lost, 20 minutes of video poker, broke even. These forums are great, belonged to a honda vtx 1800 forum, saved my butt. So hello and thank you in advance for a series of dumb questions!

Hellooooooooo, Normy! Welcome, and I'm sure we're all looking forwards to seeing your pics and and answering your dumb questions - or at least trying to. Why don't you start by telling us what brand of camera you have, so we can see if you're in the right place? After that, assuming it's a Nikon, perhaps we can help you get to know it a bit better!

And congrats on coming back from your casino trip with your shirt still on :)

Ha! I just saw now in another post where someone mentioned you had a D7100. Wish I'd seen that one first. Anyway, nice camera! Once you get the hang of it (which isn't hard) I'm sure you'll be amazed at what it can do!

Posting your pics is a piece of cake. Assuming you have pictures saved somewhere on your computer, here's all you do:

See that row of stuff just above where you start typing your posts and replies? In the middle you'll see boxes that say "Font" and "Size", and to the right of that there's a smiley face and then a box with 5 pictures (the last picture being a speech bubble). If you click on the middle picture, which looks like a box with a dot at each corner, that's what lets you add a picture.

When you click it, a box will pop up. At the top are two tabs. One says, "From Computer". The other says "From URL". If your picture is stored on a website, click "From URL" and put the full URL in the box and click "OK" at the bottom. You picture will be inserted in your comment.

If your picture is stored on your computer, click "From Computer". In the middle, you will see a button that says "Browse". Click that, and a pop-up box will appear with your computer's files that you can scroll through to find the picture you want. When you do, just double click on it. The click "Upload" in the box, wait a moment, and your picture will be inserted in your comment.

If you want your picture bigger than the tiny picture it gives you, double-click with the left mouse button while your cursor is over the picture. Another box will pop up, and you will see one of the options is "Size". Just choose Medium or Large, and it will make your picture...medium or large! Hooray!

That's all you do.

Why don't you give it a try now, to see if that makes sense. Assuming you've taken a picture already and it's stored somewhere either on your computer, or on the web, that is.

Welcome!

Guidelines to adding a photo to your post.

1. Resize photo to 1000px on the long side.
2. Resolution set to 72ppi (Pixels Per Inch)

These guidelines will be good for viewing on a computer but will not be good for printing. This will help safeguard your copyright.

how do you get pics from camera to computer

Are you saying you only view your photos on the back of your camera currently? (Or have you not taken any pictures yet?)

Listen, if you are this new to cameras, the absolute best thing you can do is follow the advice given in the other thread: DOWNLOAD THE MANUAL AND READ IT. Our member Needa provided the link: https://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/products/27/D7100.html

Giving that even a cursory look-see will answer an awful lot of your questions. Including this one.

A card reader is the easiest way to copy images to your computer. You can download the Nikon software from their site for image editing.
My older iMac had a built-in slot to read SD cards, but all of my new computers just have ports to plug in accessories.

Hi Normy123,

Here is a contact list for the Nevada Camera Club: https://nevadacc.org/content/contact-list. Contact someone on this list and explain your situation to them. There should be people willing to help you, or to put you in touch with someone who will help you.

I'm not familiar with this club or its members, but if I were in your place, I'd be in touch with them and attend some of their meetings and outings. I, personally, would likely visit a time or two and then join the club.

Good luck on your photographic journeys. There are a lot of great subjects in your area!

Welcome Normy. I hope you are prepared to do homework in coming up to speed with the rest of the class.

I am guessing you only worked with film cameras before or a smartphone more recently. Your D7100 saves the images on to the removeable SD cards behind that door where you grip the camera with your right hand. Most of us transfer the images by ejecting a card from the camera, and inserting into an SD card reader of a computer. Many computers have this card reader built in (more laptops have them than desktops), but you can buy a reader for under $20 that plugs into a USB connector of a computer.

There are computer apps that will transfer the photos when you insert a card, but Windows also will do this with it's own tools. I won't give a lesson on that because 1) this is the wrong forum for answering that question and 2) this will be impossible to answer directly as everybody's computer is somewhat different.

If you purchased this camera used, the previous owner may have set it up for "Back Button Focus". Rather than pushing the shutter button to focus, instead you press the "AE-L/AF-L" with your right thumb (the button is on the back, upper right). See if that does the trick.

Many photographers (myself included) prefer decoupling the focus function from the shutter button. If yours is set up like this, try it for a while and see what you think. If you don't like it, it's very easy to switch it back to the "press shutter halfway down to focus" method. Just ask.
