Welcome! I think I have my old N6006 in a drawer downstairs. I took a lot of pictures with that camera.

Hi Bill and welcome! :) I loved using an SLR, and even though I bought my first DSLR (D90) in the fall of 2011, I didn't put it to use until May 2012. The thought of figuring out how to use it was daunting. But once I read thru the key points for using Aperture Priority and Manual Mode, the settings for those were pretty easy. What body do you have to go with your BIG lens?

It looks like you are off to a very good start, Bill! One very rewarding thing is the instant gratification of seeing your pics right away as opposed to getting a roll of film developed. Since you already have knowledge from a 35mm film body, you are ahead of the learning curve. The biggest problem I experienced was seeing the DX crop format with my D90 when I was used to seeing a 35mm view (which is the same as FX).

Now I primarily use my DX with telephoto lenses although shooting macro has advantages with DX. Have fun and enjoy. :)
