Howdy from the top of NJ!

Hi there, it's nice to meet you all. I'm a former film hobbyist who just recently got into the DSLR game because his wife needed macro shots of her small business's products for inclusion in catalogs and magazines. My god, what a different world photography has become since I left it!

I'm slowly getting to grips with all the additional digital features that were never part of my film experience, but one area where I'm absolutely being stymied is post-processing. I'm not at all computer savvy - I have a 10+ year old PC (no phone even) that I just use to browse forums, play solitaire, and watch Band-Maid videos. Anything more complicated than that and I feel like I'm trying to decipher Linear-A. So you can imagine how lost I am looking at all the hieroglyphics that Capture NX-D is throwing at me. Which means it's all JPEG and straight out of the camera for now, until I can either find a very patient tutor or have some donor brain cells injected into me. I'm hoping for the latter.

Anyway, again, it's nice to meet you all. I'm really looking forward to contributing occasionally, and learning frequently. Thanks!

Have you tried ViewNX-i? It's easier to use the CaptureNX-D.

Hi Marilynne -

Yeah, I did. But for the life of me I can't figure that one out either (I forgot the name of it, or I would have put it in the OP also). I gotta say, I can't even fathom the difference between the two programs. They look exactly the same to me, with the exception of a few extra inscrutable scribbles down the side of NX-D.

Welcome to the forum. Digital is pretty amazing. I picked it up 4 years ago after a couple strokes. The post processing is challenging, but it can be fun too but you cannot get in a hurry, or at least that is what I have found.

I spent a lot of time hanging out here and asking questions and watching YouTube videos. Eventually it got easier. Still cannot do what I once did but I sure enjoy what I can do now. Hope you enjoy it here. God bless.

Thanks very much for the welcome, and the sage words of advice! I hope my learning arc is similar to yours. I have to say, I doff my cap at you for hanging in there and not letting such a debilitating health avalanche crush your spirit. All the best to you for your continued perseverance. Bravo!

Welcome Dangerspouse. Yep, you'll find a great many helpful and patient members here on Nikonites that can start you on your way with post processing.

I shot Kodachrome up to the end and exited photography altogether for a number of years until the cost and performance of digital cameras became attractive. I bought my D5100 just over seven years ago and have greatly enjoyed it ever since.

Fantastic - it's good to know I might not be *quite* as hopeless a case as my wife (constantly) contends. Much appreciated!

By the way, I like your user name. :D Are you from the High Point, NJ area? I lived in Butler, NJ in the early '80s and always enjoyed driving north through West Milford and on to Port Jervis. NJ has a bad rap, as it's a beautiful state in many areas.

I'm no longer conversant with the program, but years ago I used Microsoft Office Picture Manager for my post processing because of its ease and good results. Even its automatic adjustment functions were pretty good. I'm uncertain if it's still available, but you may want to add it to your list of starting contenders. Marilynne's ViewNX-i is a good bet too and is more current.

So you managed to escape from the Garden State unscathed huh? Lol...you're right, we do get a bad rap. I actually drive up Rt.23 through Butler on my way home every day - small world! (I hated Butler when I was a teen. The traffic cops there are/were particularly enthusiastic. Paid a lot of fines....) I live just outside Vernon, right on the NJ/NY line, in the middle of Wawayanda State Park. It's gorgeous indeed. In fact, as you probably know, we have quite the bear population. "Trash Day" around here is colloquially known as "Bear Feeding Day". It gets pretty wild sometimes :)

Thanks for the software suggestions. I have looked at the ViewNX-i program for quite some time now, and it's still not making an impression on this concrete block between my ears. I'm lucky the little default viewer that pops up on my computer whenever I open a picture does some stuff. It basically asks me if I want it to auto-sharpen, brighten, and contrast my picture(s). I usually say "yes", and away I go. That's about as complex a program as I'm comfortable with, if it will give you any idea of my level of expertise. When I get home later I'll do a search for that Microsoft product and see if I have any luck. Thanks so much!

(ps. Go Devils!) ;)
