Nikon Fledgeling

Greetings All.

My wife & I just made the switch from Canon to Nikon. Growing up, my father was a Nikon shooter (B&W processing in the basement, etc.) & I used to borrow his 35mm cameras to photograph motocross races. How Wifey & I got deep into Canon, I have no idea.

We got real lucky recently & found someone that wanted to buy all of our old gear, so we were able to start fresh with new Nikon hardware. It'll take a while to grow the gear list to what it was, but we have what we need and are really liking it.

We started off with 2 x D500's, D850, a couple TC's, & all the glass we could get from our "trade". We still have a 500PF on order, but they sure seem to be on the slow-boat. We did try a Z7, but for wildlife & particularly birds, "it wasn't as good for me" as the 500 so we swapped it for the D850 and are happy w/ the results.

First impressions from the D500(s) is excellent. I am floored by focus acquisition, lock, & tracking for birds in flight. It is superior to even the high-end Canon's I have been shooting for the last several years.

I found this site while out searching for Nikon resources. We have a lot to learn, but we are eager! :)

Welcome!

Anything particular reason for the change?

One of our shooting buddies is a professional photographer and life long Nikon shooter. He had me thinking on several occasions while we were out, setup adjacent to one another (particularly when the background was busy, like a tree line) we would go to shoot the same bird flying by & he would seemingly always get locked on and get the shots that I missed due to focus grabbing the background.

Then, when the 500PF was announced he suggested how nice that would be for Wifey simply from a weight perspective. She was shooting a Canon 500F4 at the time. When I began investigating the 500PF, I got more intrigued. I ended up picking up a D500 & 200-500 for us both to play with, thinking that if it did well, we could get her the 500PF. Well, long story short... I took that combo for initial setup & testing and was flabbergasted by the focus acquisition, lock, & retention. Suddenly, I understood.

The wheels began turning faster.

When I came across a buyer for all my Canon gear, it was done.

So far, we are very happy. If her 500PF would ever sow up, it would be even better! :)

Thank you all for the welcome.
