Excited to have a "real" camera

Hi! I just joined a few days ago after getting my first DSLR. I have been enjoying browsing and learning from the site. I researched for several months and then decided the best entry level DSLR camera for me that would not break the bank was the D5300. I got it with AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55 f/3.5-5.6G VRII kit lens (refurbished by Nikon to save a few more dollars). I have a beginners understanding of the exposure triangle and have been practicing shooting in manual but right now aperture priority mode is my favorite.
Looking forward to learning more especially about post processing.

Welcome! Good choice, I started with a D5100. Looking forward to seeing some of those pictures.

Welcome to the forum. Now let's see some photos.

Guidelines to adding a photo to your post.

1. Resize photo to 1000px on the long side.
2. Resolution set to 72ppi (Pixels Per Inch)

These guidelines will be good for viewing on a computer but will not be good for printing. This will help safeguard your copyright.

Howdy and welcome to Nikonites!!!

The D5300 is a great camera, and I think you’ll find the kit lens to be a surprisingly capable!

I hope to see some of your images in the weekly challenges soon!

Welcome. That is a great camera, at the center is a great sensor. With great glass and learned skills that camera can put out some amazing stuff.

Good camera choice - I have a new D5300 and an old D60, and the improvement between the two is unbelievable!

I have two bits of advice - First, avoid the "upgrade itch" as long as you can. Your present camera is one of the best in the market, and is generally still recommended over the D5500. Having said that, my second bit of advice is grab yourself a prime lens (35mm or nifty fifty) and see how well it performs indoors.

Other than that, my only other suggestion is never shutter when someone is holding two fingers up behind someone else's head (bunny ears!).

Have fun!

Welcome to the forum. Like others have said, the D5300 is a great camera and that lens works well with it. I know, because that's what I started with. As you progress, don't hesitate to ask questions. There are many knowledgeable folks on here willing to give you a hand.

Super Mod
Need some constructive criticism and pointing in right direction. These were taken in the afternoon and I kicked up the golden aspect of the setting sun a tiny bit using one of the preset modes when I edited it. I guess where I need to start is can some one point me in the right direction of a good tutorial on editing to enhance colors without making the snow (or the whites of someone's eye's etc) look blue.
