Howdy from KY

I was a hobbyist 30 some years ago and got away from photography as too many other hobbies got in the way. My wife has gotten into taking pictures recently and I got her a D3400 kit for Christmas last year and she has come a long way. She takes most of the pictures while I drive around to various places. She has had a lot of fun with my old manual focus lenses. I look forward to learning a lot from you all.

Howdy and welcome to Nikonites!!!

With you also being a hobbyist, how long until there's a second camera body in the family? ;)

Soon I hope. The plan is to upgrade to a full frame when the funds are available. I may need to sell some stuff from one of my other hobbies.

Just my opinion but I’d spend the money for the Nikon D850 if your upgrading to FF. They might be introducing a new version of the D750 that should be interesting.

Welcome to the forum.

Welcome aboard. Enjoy the ride.
We look forward to seeing more posts and samples of your work.

What kind of photography are you into? If heavy on landscape and portraits, then FF is the way to go. But if you are into birds, wildlife and action, you might want to consider sticking with DX unless you can afford the a D850.

That is an interesting point. It's mostly closeup macro type stuff and birds with some landscape. My plan was to upgrade with FX lenses first, then the full frame. Perhaps I need to rethink that. I want to get a 100 or 105mm macro lens soon and was looking at this one Tokina 100mm f/2.8 Macro Review . It has pretty good reviews. I realize it won't autofocus on the 3400 but that's not a big deal.

I'm near U of L, University of LaGrange (state prison :)) not too far from you. How are you liking that 200-500mm? It's on my wish list.

I have the Tokina Macro lens for my D7200 and it works great. You can use an FX (FF) lens on the DX camera, but not so much the other way.
