Hello,

I'm pretty new to SLR's and decided to finally get my own.
Today I bought from B&H Photo and got a D5100 body and a Tamron AF18-270 lens with vibration control. I was getting the Costco package and a buddy at work said to get one lens instead and suggested this one.
[h=1][/h]I also bought and aftermarket GPS on Amazon for $35.00.

I still need to learn how to edit and get editing software.

Anyways, if anyone has any suggestions I'd really appreciate it.
I wanted a nice camera and this is what I came up with.

I went on vacation and bought a new Nikon AW100 waterproof since we were going to the Virgin Islands.
It took just ok pictures and the day I needed a waterproof camera I left the battery on the charger in the condo and had to buy a disposable waterproof camera.

I want a nice camera for the next vacation so I got this one. I debated this or the Canon T3i and chose the Nikon because it seemed better and more fun for a beginner with fun features and should be fine for me for a few years.

Anyways, any help is much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi there,
I was given D5100 (body only) as a Xmas gift and I too began practicing with a prime lens (35mm/1.8) and one lens that covered the most range (Nikon 18-300mm)

I travel a lot, often to remote locations in the wild for landscape/wildlife pictures and so for me, the 18-300 has been phenomenal. The convenience of not having to switch lenses in the element and getting that spot-on quick focus before the animal decides to shy away in seconds has been absolutely delightful. I tested and seriously considered the Tamron you own before finding a decent price on the Nikon 18-300mm through a rare Nikon rebate.

If you're taking this camera for your vacation, perhaps a prime lens for street photography?
18-270mm really covers a lot of ground so something small/light but fast prime lens could be worth the investment. I recently upgraded my prime from 35mm/1.8 to 50mm/1.4g

Just a thought ;)

I just got a good deal on a lightly used Tamron 18-270mm PZD to try on my D5100.

Anyway welcome to the forum and hope you enjoy your new camera
