Good Morning from NY

Good morning everyone!

My fiance's family had gotten my a Nikon D3400 with a 18-55mm and a 70-300mm lens for Christmas. I had a Canon camera a few years back I would mess around with but ended up selling it after I moved. I'd still consider myself a newbie to photography. Any tips or tricks would greatly be appreciated, especially since I'm new to the world of Nikon. Any other accessories you guys recommend picking up?

Welcome, lots of info here to explore. Being that the D3400 is a newer camera I don't think there is a subforum here for it yet, however there is one for D3300 which should help you get started. As far as add ons for your camera... What sort of photography are you interested in?

I didn't realize the model was so new, that's awesome! I prefer flowers, landscapes and architecture...with the random pictures of my 2 cats here and there.

Welcome to the forum. Your new camera will do fine with the type of shooting that you enjoy. I'm not sure about the lenses however. Are you sure you posted the right lenses? I never heard of a Nikon 55-85mm nor a 75-300mm lens.
Are you sure they are not the 18-55mm and the 70-300mm lens?

I may have clicked the wrong one. I have the 18-55mm kit lens and the 70-300mm lens. It was a two lens bundle. (the 75-300mm was the Canon lens that I used to own.. I think I just hit 75 out of habit.)

The 18-55 will serve you well with your landscape and architectural shots. I used to have the older D3100 and the 18-55 mm lens . It was a very nice combo to start with and gave me lots of nice landscape images.
For my flower shots, I used to use the 70-300mmVR lens, but you can use the 18-55mm as well. It has a short focusing distance, so you can get very close.
Good luck and looking forward to your images.

The biggest tip I can give you is to get 100% comfortable with learning how 'exposure' works. Just google 'exposure triangle'. With a little bit of reading and taking the time to fully understand the relationship of shutter, aperture and iso, you will have a much easier time. The user manual will make more sense and all the features will make more sense if you get a good understanding of exposure. The 2nd tip is learn how your focus modes behave. We can give you links on this stuff if you need it.

Awesome! Thank you, I will start looking into this when I get back home.

Welcome to Nikonites. Your lens combination is what I started with also. They are both good lenses. I am sure that you will enjoy your new camera. All of the info already given by others is good advice. As you play with the new gear, don't hesitate to ask questions. There are a lot of great folks on here who with their knowledge can almost answer anything.

hello and welcome.

Best advice is shot shot shot, open a 365 thread and post all your shots in there, look at other peoples posts you like and try and remember what they shot at (if you hover your mouse over the bottom left of the pic you will see the exif details) i took a few phone pics of the details to remember, like the rest of us with time you will get it, your 70-300 will be good for moon shots, you will get good crater details with it, good luck and happy shooting.
