Hello!

I just bought my wife (newbie-ish) a D5500 kit from Costco. Wondering if there are any helpful setup hints. She will likely shoot jpeg. However, I will delve into RAW!

I am Sony shooter. I looked at the D7200, but with significant $$$ tied up in lenses, I couldn't justify the switch when I needed to replace the older body. Who knows? Maybe this will sway me to the dark side (JK)!

Hoping she will be keen on the idea of at least getting the 35mm and 50mm 1.8 lenses. I've told her that is pretty much a necessity! No luck in convincing her she really needed the D810! lol

Any hints or gotchas to avoid with Nikon equipment would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

Welcome you our Nikonites family! Well those two lenses are a great deal for the prices they go for! I'm strickly Nikon, so I might not recognise things that are different from Sony! Lol :)

First and foremost I would tell you not to underestimate the D5500; that's a lot of camera. It may lack some of the external bells and whistles of the more expensive pro-level bodies, but the D5500 has it where it really counts.

Since the wife will be shooting JPG, I'm going to suggest you adjust the Sharpness setting in the Picture Controls menu. For some odd reason the default setting is way low, and bumping the setting will have a really big impact in the overall sharpness of your JPG photos. The setting will not affect RAW files (unless you use Nikon software to process them and that's a whole 'nother kettle o' fish).

To make this adjustment...

Press the Menu button.
Highlight the Shooting Menu (camera icon).
Drop down to "Set Picture Control" then click right one time.
  • This menu contains all the Picture Controls (Stanadard, Vivid, Landscape, etc.) and each one has it's own set of Quick Adjust menus.
Highlight the Picture Control you're using, probably "Standard", and click right one time to enter the Quick Adjust menu.
Highlight the "Sharpening" setting in this menu and increase it from the oddly low default setting of 2 or 3, to the vastly sharper setting of +6 or +7.
Press "OK" to exit the menu aaand... You're done. If you want to adjust the Sharpness settings for the other Picture Controls you can of course.

.....

The Nikon 35mm f/1.8G would be nothing short of awesome on that camera. If you wanna go "all out", look into the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art series lens. A personal favorite of myself and my girlfriend who, once she discovered how well it shoots has it pretty much welded to her D5300.

All - Thanks for the welcome.

Paul,
Thank you, sir, for the information. I want her to have a great experience with it. I am looking forward to how our approach and styles differ.

Greetings from Wichita Falls, TX. :)

Thanks, Dxer. I assume that is for the sensor size and you're not a ham radio operator.

I had a daughter looking at attending Midwestern State. Obviously they were only interested in out-of-state tuition. She had already been accepted other places with academic scholarships, but they wanted her to pay for additional "placement tests". We were all like, "Wait, what, huh"?! Needless to say, we moved on.

Sad though. From what I understand, she liked the area.

Dxer,

Same here. Technician in '91 and upgraded to General in '01. I'm not a CW guy, but had to be to upgrade. Passed and didn't touch it again. Just not my thing.

CW isn't everyone's thing. Still doesn't mean people can't enjoy the hobby. :)
In my case, CW is my primary mode. I dreaded having to learn it when I started the hobby, but
became to enjoy it very much. Besides, when I got my novice in 83, I had to operate CW or nothing
at all. Got my General in 84 then got my Extra in 96. I'm living in an apartment right now so I have
been QRT for the past several years. :(
