Another from Canon to Nikon

Due to misfortune my Canon outfit was stolen and due to the insurance being old for new (insurance that actually works wow) I am slowly kitting myself out with a nikon D810 outfit.

I have had the body for a week but the first of 2 lenses only turned up today and this is my first shot with the D810 and tamron 24-70......

Far from perfect but I am yet to figure out how to use the Nikon properly and just wanted to capture something, the body is so different to the EOS.
Best figure out the metering.
Kid and new toy syndrome going on here.

Your dog needs a clip almost as badly as ours does. LOL. I know he has eyes somewhere under all that fur. Regardless, that's a nice shot.

Welcome!

At least you'll never get lost on those terrible menus ever again! Had to play w/ friend's 6D 2 weeks back and for the love of anything couldn't find rear curtain sync option. It ended up being awkwardly-pictured button on the flash unit itself, but I find that RIDICULOUS that a FF body doesn't have that option in it.

Tried to get a few more. Took me ages to figure out the AF-S and AF-C. Such a different system to Canon. I like it now I know how to use it but sitting in a field scratching my head an getting the mobile out to do a net search revealed the answers eventually.

Welcome!

She is getting her first clip in 10 days, I'm dreading it I love her coat.
She is only 9 months old so I have no idea what she is going to look like once all the wool has gone (tiny I'd imagine).

So I'm curious... What swung you over to Nikon?
...

Oh god.....
Obviously having all my gear stolen in one hit (it was nicely wrapped up in a lowepro bag for the sh1ts to take) gave me the opportunity to explore what I wanted as a replacement. I assumed I would get a 5D mk iii but wanted to do some reading first as a friends husband is a semi pro photographer and he is Nikon. Talking to him he kept saying go Nikon but I wasn't sure.
The release of the new Canon 5D got me all excited till I realized what the price was. After reading lots of reviews, watching lots of reviews on you tube and reading lots of tests such as DXO I came to realize the nikon has sharper images for the kind of photography I do and the colour range is greater (more dynamic). If you shoot sports or wildlife I believe the Pro grade Canon to be the better machine, it has better performance in poor natural light conditions and better burst rates with a faster and larger buffer. Other than that the Pro Nikon bodies tend to win. Some of the Canon lenses are better, the Canon 70-200 is the best in its class (my opinion only and possibly out of date). Can't wait for the 70-200 Tamron to turn up later this week and see how it compares, still amazed that the Tamron 24-70 and 70-200 out performs their Nikkor counter parts on most things, especially sharpness. The shots above were with the Tamron 24-70 and one of them was very heavily cropped and it stayed sharp. The vignetting in one shot was added, it's not the lens.

Sorry to bore you

Heh... Sorry, but I'm stone-cold bored at work and I just got curious.

Some valid points there I'd say. I got to handle a 5DS (R) a few days ago and wow... I was impressed. What a beast!!

Hardly... The job. The Job is boring me. You've provided at least a momentary distraction. :)

Think the 5DS and 5DSR are going to be amazing for astro, studio work and probably weddings.
The Nikons higher dynamic range has become a big selling point to me (on paper at least). And in good light having the lower ISO setting should make for amazing landscapes.

Go on then, what's the boring job?
I'll provide light entertainment ;-)

Okay, well... You asked for it...

[Boredom Shields: ENGAGE!]

At my day job I'm a mild-mannered (HA! (Don't cross me!!)) General Manager of the Visual Arts Division at a college. We offer classes in most all the traditional studio arts (painting, drawing, ceramics, foundry, hot-glass and cold glass, sculpture, jewelry-making), some non-traditional (such as 3D modeling and animation, graphic design, typography and so forth) and a little art history. I get to deal with the day to day operations of the department including, but not limited to, things like inventory control, payroll, health and safety issues, class schedule building, state compliance reporting (lots of this) student issues, faculty issues, boot licking, car parking, and wiping the butts of the College President's award winning weimaraner's.

By night, I'm a fully-costumed crime-fighting Ninja/Pirate/Casanova/Vigilante with a heart of gold that mixes one HELL of a dry martini. My back-story, while tragic and somewhat Kafka-esque, is as memorable as it is endearing.

I know DxO score say otherwise, and i haven't compared the Tamron 70-200 f2.8 to the Nikon personally, but those who have say the optics are very similar, but in all other areas the Nikon is the better lens. Welcome along..
