Just wanted to say hi. I'm a casual(beginner/novice) photographer from SoCal. Its more of a hobby for me now along with other expensive hobbies:)

Still eager to learn more.

I currently own the following:
-D5100
-Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G
-Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR
-Nikkor 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G VR

I've been looking to upgrade to the D7100 within the next month or so. I shoot in manual mode. Would an FX (like the D610) camera be worth while for a casual weekend photographer?

Thx.

Welcome! I'd decide if you want to stay DX or go full frame and then buy lenses along the way to compliment that choice. Right now, you are DX, and have the right lenses for a D7100. It's a great camera!

Howdy and welcome to Nikonites!

Like others have responded on the D7100 vs D610 question, right now your lenses would favor the D7100 but it also doesn't sound like you have a lot invested in lenses so going full frame (i.e. D610) isn't out of the question, particularly if you bought another body and lens kit. Both are great cameras, so it just depends on what your goals are.

What is this fascination with FX cameras? Something wrong with your DX? You have DX lenses...you want to spend more on FX lenses? Will you be making money with your photography to justify having an FX camera? Or is it just to say that you HAVE a full frame (FF) camera to your friends!? A D7100 will MORE than satisfy your amateur leanings into photography for years to come. Don't get caught up in the FX/DX game.

By the way...welcome to Nikonites. Have fun. :)

As for camera the D5100 is a good place to be if you remain a novice, heck she is a good piece of kit for anybody! See Siamthai1 incredible work on this forum!

I am a fan of full frame but you are set up with your current kit to seamlessly add the D7100 and at current prices it is a bargain. I wouldn't worry about FX right now when you are ready it is no trouble to flip an entire DX kit on craigslist and start over. The real nice feature of the D7100 is it will allow you to explore full frame Nikkor AF D glass which often offers amazing performance for very little money.....a real hidden fabulous feature of the Nikon F mount.

Have fun and surf's up!

Thanks to all for your comments. Looks like I will be getting the D7100 after I get back from Hawaii. I'm contemplating on whether I should keep the D5100 as well or sell it on eBay or Craigslist.
@fotojack. No fascination with FX cameras. A couple of my friends are convinced that a FX camera takes better pictures since they are more expensive. I really think that its the person behind the camera that matters.

Using that analogy.....an idiot behind the wheel of a Ferrari makes him a better driver? ;) Me thinks your friends are delusional. :) Use your own common sense, and you'll be just fine. :)
Enjoy your new D7100 when you finally get it. :)
