I,m totally new to Nikon cameras annd am trying to gather info on what camera I should buy. My son has the 3100 with the bsic lens that it came with, His pics and videos are great. So right now I am thinking 3100 body only and a more expensive lens to go with it. One reason for the thought of a 3100 is that not being the latest, the camera prices are in my range. Tell me what you think. Paul

Welcome to Nikonites! I hope you'll have a blast with us! :D

I understand what your saying about the price of the D3100 fitting your budget. There is nothing wrong with the D3100, and one of my favorite shots was taken with a D3100! :)

But what lens you may want to go with it will depend highly on what your wanting to shoot the most. And lenses can get higher priced than the camera, depending on which lens you want.
If your just shooting general photos of friends and family and such, then the Nikkor af-s 35mm f/1.8 lens would be a great choice for about $200.00 . :)

Plan to shoot nature and people photos- would the lens you suggest be appropriate or would another lens be better? Also, I've looked at all the specs ETC of the 3300 but, being new to cameras, in layman's terms-what are the selling points of the 3300 over the 3100? Paul
