Hi, I´m newbie and I have a question

I’m always been a keen amateur photographer, and I like to travel. My gear is a D3100 and an extra zoom 55-300VR. Me and my husband went on a RTW-(round the world)-trip last year, so lots of pictures. I also enjoy editing my photos.

This interest in photo and travel seems to have rubbed of on my son. So our family wants to give him a camera on his 30th birthday. The choice is between D3200 and D5200.

His girlfriend and I are negotiating. I'm in favour for the D3200. So what to choose?


I mistrust the moveable LCD-display on the D5200. and it’s more expensive. Of course, if you prefer to film the 5200 is preferable. If I could afford to upgrade I would choose the 3200. Imagine me stumble when I try to capture our cats pretend-fight . If you fall, it's easy for the LCD display to fall off.

Hi and welcome...Another camera to have a look at is the D7000....It's an older model but a very good one...

Personally you could pick up a very capable D5100 for less than the price of the D3200 or D5200.

Thanks, pedroj and Sam foor good advice. But both alternatives exceeds the negotiated price. I would appreciate your opinion on a vari-angle LCD-monitor.

I just had a phone call from the girlfriend. She bought the D5200 camera yesterday. One week before decision should be reached!!

So I just have to lay back and let my grown-up son take care of his own life. Difficult since the girlfriend likes to do that, and she knows null about photographing.

I would not worry about the screen. I read these forums a lot and cannot recall anyone snapping their screen off. If he drops the camera, more than the screen will break anyway. It should be fine in normal usage.

How about giving him your D3100 and getting yourself the new D3200 or D5200.

Welcome. I have the D5100 with the moveable monitor. If I use it, I turn and flip it so it's flush with the camera, not sticking out. Lately, I don't even use it unless I need to make an adjustment to a setting.
