Noob; lens suggestions?

Hey all, I've had a d40 for years now but decided to get a little bit more serious and picked up a d7100 body. Any suggestions on a good starter lens? Kind of on a budget so I'm trying to keep it under $500. Any inputs are welcome! Glad to be joining this community!

Well it would help knowing what type of photography you pursue, but the Nikon 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S is the lens that rarely comes off my camera body these days. Kind of a jack-of-all-Trades sort of lens.

Or even 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G ED and then ~400 to hold onto and possibly get a fast prime of your favorite focal length. Either of these will give you a good idea of what lengths you use the most, if you need zoom farther than 70 or 105, etc.
