Hi everyone,

I look forward to learning and improving my photography with the help of this community. I specially like that there is a dedicated critique thread as I am still at a loss as to what works and what does not.

Best regards,
Gene

Hello, Gene and welcome to the Nikonites Community. I visited your Gallery and you have some really nice bird shots. Your knowledge of capturing long lens shots like this is a welcomed addition to the community. You will find the people here knowledgable and responsive to any questions you may have.

Happy shooting, :)

Hi Gene and welcome!

I too looked at your gallery - thanks for sharing. I noticed that you have the Bigma in your kit! How do you like it?

Thank you for the warm welcome, Joseph, Eduard and Helene. And thanks for the kind words about my images.

Eduard, I'm still not quite sure about the Sigma 150-500. I got it because of the value (500mm for less than 1K? Add to Cart!). I then proceeded to use it exclusively at 500mm, but I was quite disappointed. I have since learned that the usable limit is 400, so I will try and explore that further. It might take some doing, though, since I also now have the 70-200 and the TC20iii, so I've already got 400 covered. I am quite happy with the performance, portability and range of that combo, and I retain AF to boot!

I have a newbie type question about uploading images to the gallery. What are your recommendations about file size - do you keep it down so that others with not so large monitors can view it better or do you go full size, as I have done in my initial uploads? I prefer to stick to full size, since my love affair with the D3x involves the level of detail that it delivers, but that might also work against me. I'd appreciate your thoughts on this. I have to admit I'm pleasantly surprised that this forum is actually encouraging larger file sizes and resolution (Wow! up to 1200x1200). I'm not so worried about theft, yet. I might even be flattered if someone actually wanted to steal any of my images. :D

Cheers,
Gene

Gene, welcome to Nikonites. Hope you enjoy your stay here. Nice gallery you have there. Very impressive. :)
As for uploads: the larger they are, the longer they take to load on some people's computers. Some have dial up still, so draw your own conclusions. General size would be in the 800x600 range, but 1200x1200 is still acceptable, too. Any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks fotojack. I was doing some testing: viewed a pic in my gallery, right click, save image as, (oh-oh), but the downloaded image had been downsized. So does that mean that the image displayed is downsized anyway, so no point in uploading full sized images?

Ed, isn't the 50-500 the Bigma? Gene, I was looking at the 150-500 sigma, you say you don't like it past 400? That is good to know as the 400-500 would be the focal length I would be looking at mostly for that lens. I was not looking for now but in the future. The 70-200 VRI or VRII are not in my budget now or in the future, my wife would shot me lol. What other combos do you recommend for the >300mm focal length that don't require me to sell my second car?

Hi Mark, I'm afraid to dream past 400 as that would certainly cause my demise too. :)

I hear many good things about the 300 f4 with the tc17, but you would be in manual focus, so it depends on the subject matter. I'm so glad the tc20iii worked out as that would have been my next option. I had to pay a $100 premium on the TC20iii. but I've been waiting for availability for 3-4 mos.

The 80-400 is also well liked, but the 300 f4 is preferred. The former is due for replacement and it's hot on the rumor mill, so maybe wait and see would be another option.

Hope this helps.
