Seemed like, of all the things I had easily at hand, this is the subject that would be most in keeping with this month's theme. A late 1960s- or early 1970s-vintage 50mm ƒ1.4 Nikkor.
Although this 50mm, mounted on my D3200, would amount to a 77.5mm equivalent, I wonder if it'd be considered acceptable in this assignment to submit a picture taken with it. If I find other subject matter that seems to call for it, perhaps I'll submit my other two allowed entries, one using this 50mm, and one using the “kit lens” zoomed as close to a “50mm equivalent” as I can reasonably get it.
How bout if I just set my 18-55 on 35 mm, since I don't have a 35mm prime?
Plese tell me you're not discriminating against people who can't afford one right now.
You're good with the zoom set to 35mm. At least, that's how I read the OR an equal focal length with a zoom comment.
Just to reiterate... we're doing a focal length of 18-35mm with any type of lens (if we don't have a prime)?
I don't think that's correct. The 18mm end only applies to CX crop, and the 35mm for DX. the question is, can you travel north or south of those numbers, and if so, how much? 35mm on a DX is really 52mm, so I'd think a 52mm or even 55mm might be ok on FX, and if that's the case, why wouldn't 28mm (44mm equivalent) be in range on DX?
The thing is, if you don't make it a fixed length for each crop, you run the risk of edging beyond the lines. It's easy enough to dial in a zoom by checking the EXIF on the shot, but as always, it can creep. This challenge is already more complicated than it should be. And I'm not helping. LOL
Haha... I'm not up to date on all the terminology... I just learned what a "prime" lens was when I joined here a little over a month ago. lol I have a 18-55mm and a 55-200mm lens for my camera (D7000). So what "fixed" length can I do it at?
Using your 18-55mm zoomed to ~50mm on the D7000 would be safe. The gray area would be if you used the 55-200mm zoomed out all the way to 55mm.

Thanks RC... That's what I understood too, but I would rather double check.
Way I read it for a DX camera 7000 is in that class needs to be at 35mm
Yup ... scratch everything I said and use the 18-55mm zoomed to 35mm.
Can I use my 55mm f/2.8 AIS Micro?
I'm assuming a 28mm prime with a DX at 42mm isn't quite close enough?
That's next months contest. Every month it will go up 5mm, Until only people withe Tamron 150-600 are able to participate.
But if I stack enough teleconverters, and have an atomic explosion as my light source, can I still use my 35mm prime when we get to the super zooms?
