That is what I wanted to get at in your intro thread...are you a beginner etc... Pete is right the 1 is mighty expensive for what is there but the camera is not for everyone...the 3100 is a fantastic camera...you could also maybe buy a Fuji X Pro 1 which is going to be a showstopper unit I bet...

It is difficult to give you a good opinion on such general subjects as if this camera is good, bad, or ugly, or whatever without sort of knowing where you are at.

So you would suggest a D3100?

I would suggest that you get hold of an SD card and go to a camera store and try out the D3100.

You may hate the feel of it, you may love it, but either way, it needs to fit YOU. I love mine, but thats me.

I tried out a Nikon 1 around Christmas and I hated the blasted thing! Its just about the right size to be a surf fishing weight, but I don't surf fish!

I actually liked how the J1 felt. I tried others but not sure how I liked them. However Sony makes one comparable but has better features I've looked at and liked it too.

You've been looking at NEXs and 1s??? Better take a peak at Fuji because they are kicking everyones @ss in that market...especially with the X Pro...

I believe it is Eduard or perhaps it is another member here on the forum but someone here has a X10...it is much more handsome camera than the 1 but it is a fixed lens camera...and that doesn't mean it is not a good camera....

I just paid $1199+tax for a NEX-7 body, but I believe the future is in mirrorless systems and smaller sensors. I am only dealing with the technology now, and I sure that I will buy a Nikon 1 when the time comes. Maybe a Nikon 1 is just for your needs and a your level.

Well Jezzce you and me are outnumbered bigtime especially on this forum but also in the photography world in general because I too believe the future is mirrorless. Just like the SLR took the crown away from the rangefinder the mirrorless camera is going to take the crown away from the DSLR someday. Probably sooner than later. The Fuji X Pro 1 is the first apc sized sensor in such a unit I think and as soon as the engineer boys work through some knotty problems concerning the distance between the back element of the lens and the sensor plane they'll have it. I would almost bet you money within the next 5 years we are going to see a DX (APC) maybe even a FX Nikon mirrorless camera with EVF and you can say goodbye to mirror slap once and for all. What will be interesting is to see how well the new Fuji does and also to see who will get there first Nikon or Canon. Reports on the Fuji are beginning to trickle onto the net and whoa boy you oughtta see what that sucker does!

I seriously was considering it last year but we went with a Canon S95 as my wife's P&S.

I remember the days I spent most of my time in the darkroom, and didn’t care much about the camera I used. I was already using 35mm for years, into my 6th 35mm camera. My friend convinced me to buy the RB67. I was foolish to buy and carried that camera for over a year. Yes, it was easier to get the qualities that I wanted, but it wasn’t impossible get it with 35mm. Then he asked me get rid of the RB67 to buy a Leica M4 and Super Angulon. I sold the RB67, but didn’t had enough to get the Leica.

Many photographers pick up a camera to make a living. They want a professional point & shoot. A camera to give them acceptable pictures with the least problems. I, however like the challenge. I put too much time on a photo, and would never be able to make any commercial sense.
