dumb question but bear with me

I saw a youtube video where they had a dx camera, ff camera, teleconverter, and a pentax q7. Every camera used the same lens shooting the same bird sitting on a sign. Each option was cropped to fill the frame and the q7 was arguably the winner.

Which bridge camera with a really high pixel density and total pixels are good candidates for doing this? I'm getting pretty excited about the prospect of my 180mm f/2.8 on a q7 shooting effectively 720mm. Is there another similar camera with the same level or crop effect with high pixel count? Do these cameras perform well at high isos? Sorry for asking a dumb question, but I'm getting tired of using tcs.

Some guess work and some memory here, the pentax must have a sensor like a bridge camera very small about 12mp,if so the Nikon 1 J5 wil have a 20mp sensor twice as large (approx) use half the J5 and you get 10 mp,your 180 is 486 on a 1 series double that because we are talking half the sensor and we have 972mm.

Not sure if ime right about the sensor size but must be fairly close due to the FOV.

Looks like you could be right Mike,

Just had a look on google, and the Pentax Q7 has a 1/1.7-inch sensor, magnifies the focal length by 4.6x.

" the 5-15mm standard zoom lens, becomes the equivalent of a 23-69mm optic on the Pentax Q7"

I cant see a lot of sense in going that way,no view finder, not much in the way of AE,no AF and no VR,just looks like putting a load of negative points in one package, its easy for me to say P900 because it just fills a niche for me as i have the DSLR and long lens but that or the new bridge from Nikon when it comes out with a 1 inch sensor and 24-500 lens.

Will those cameras you are talking about take a regular lens with an adapter? I suppose I'd lose the screw drive af too? I'm mainly looking for the camera with the highest pixel density on the sensor I can put a regular lens on (even if I have to manual focus). I suppose my first question should be which camera/sensor has the highest pixel density? Which can take my nikon lens with an adapter? Can this camera run AF on a lens with its own motor and one that requires a screw drive?

The only ones i can see that will match some of your requirements is the 1 series from nikon, the down side is they only have a 2,7 crop factor so your lens would be a 486mm 2.8,i know you say your not bothered but there is no way i would want to do birding with anything but a matched system where every thing was working,AF,AE,VR and have a viewfinder, thats just me though.

The Nikon 1 is great for this application. Loved shooting the 70-200 F4 VR with the Nikon V2. The 1 inch sensor gives you something to work with in post and better ISO capability than the little bridge cameras. The Nikon Cx sensor is pretty good up to 800 ISO, fast glass helps a lot. The 2.7 crop made my 70-200 a 190-540, was a lot of fun to shoot with. The larger sensor gives you more cropping ability which is a huge plus. While you don't have great AF tracking, you gain silent shooting, more important to me for my wildlife shots.

Is that a screw drive focus?

I'll just wait until I run across someone with a Nikon1 and we'll swap for the day (my toys are funner to play with) to see if I like it. Maybe as the sensors evolve a little more, we'll get a specialized birder camera like a D7100 with a much smaller 30 mp sensor, screw drive, and the top of the line nikon firmware and a/d converters. Once they get 60ish MP and the files are unmanagable, they'll be in a position to do r and d on DX sensors to perfect the higher pixel pitches and after than that only choice will be to make the sensors even smaller than dx on full size cameras.

Any of the V series (V1,V2,V3) cameras and the 70-300mm CX lens (equivalent to 189-810 on an FX) would be a great combo for birding. Or wait for the V4/V5 which should have the better sensor that the J5 already have. Focuses really fast. And the 70-300mm CX lens is the best zoom lens in the Nikon 1 series. The only thing with the J5 is it does not have the EVF which makes it easier for birding. I have the FT1 too but hardly use it.
