Rick's V2 Thread

Since I recently upgraded to the V2 from the J3 I thought I'd start a new thread. The V2 shares the same sensor as the J3, but adds a built in grip and EVF along with more external controls. The V2 was not on my shortlist, but I could not resist the deal at Henry's of Canada, almost half the price as in the US! I also picked up the F1 adapter so I could use my Fx glass and take advantage of the 2.7 crop factor.

The Nikon 70-200 f4 gives me a FoV of 540mm on the V2, I'll start with a few test shots with that combo, all at 200mm (540). These were shot at twice the normal distance of my recent bird shots. Once I get the blind out to my normal spot, I'll have to back off from 200mm.

Some more tests tonight, gloomy weather so a good opportunity to test at ISO 800. With the ability to get closer, 800 becomes even more usable. These are at only 1/125-1/160 @ 540mm FoV so they are a tad soft. Silent shooting is going to be a huge bonus when I get up closer in the blind. I was very limited with the noise from the D600 shutter. I also tested the new firmware upgrade for continuous AF using the f1 adapter, works great! Silent shooting at 15 fps in continuous AF!

Great capture! You might want to consider cropping or cloning out the pole on the left edge and the lower right corner? Really not liking the camera, eh? (Threw that in since your V2 is Canadian.)

Lol, loving it! What a difference a viewfinder makes! Only thing it's lacking is auto-bracketing, but I can live with that. Hopefully the V4 will have it :). I am really pleased that this came along at such a great price, I needed a reason to get the V3 off my list.

The setup- V2 with the f1 adapter and 70-200 f4, on my new MeFoto tripod. I could use the tripod mount on the f1, but the collar on the lens gives me a perfectly balanced combo.

Another shot with this combo. My file sizes are about 3 times as large after cropping as opposed to the D600 and 70-200. The IQ is excellent,

File size I think. my D600 shots after cropping were about 1-2 MB. The same shots With the V2 are averaging 3-6 MB after cropping (much less).

That's strange since the sensor is smaller with the V2... What's the pixel size of your finished shots?

540mm FoV vs. 200mm?

Look at these 2 very similar shots, different days, not processed the same. The first had the benefit of more sunlight.

The first with the D600 @200mm, finished size 2137x1709

This one with the V2 combo, 175mm (473mm FoV) finished size 3472x2777

Both are great shots. I still wonder why the one with the V2 is bigger size. Was the one done with the D600 cropped so you'd be using a smaller portion of sensor than the size of the V2?

Yes exactly, I had to crop so much in post that the file size becomes much smaller with the D600. With the 540mm Fov on the V2 there is much less cropping, preserving more MB.

Rick,i dont want to derail your thread but ime trying to get my head round this, you say it uses more MP than the D600 cropped, ime ok with that bit but cant work out if it would use more than the D7100 cropped,my thinking is the D7100 would have more than the D600 after cropping but thats where i get lost.
Second question have you heard of any sigma incompatibility issues my thinking is it may be the way for me to go rather than buying a longer and heavier lens than i all ready have.

Thanks

The greater magnification leads to less cropping, so much so in this case, the final file is larger. I have not heard of compatibility issues, but would test before you buy if you can. D7100 would have a larger file due to the cropped sensor and pixel density.
