Re: Hoya NXT CPL Filters 67mm & 72mm

Thanks Cindy!

I was happy to move them...now I just need to find a 77mm filter for the 24-120!

Previously I was using a Hoya HD CP filter for mine. I also had a second one permanently mounted on my 300mm lens (both are 77mm). One of them split where the filter rotates causing it to separate into 2 pieces - each holding an unbroken piece of glass. The second filter was loose but not broken. My warranty was within one week of expiring so Hoya said to send it in. They also allowed me to send in the second filter for inspection.

They repaired the broken filter. The other was in the exact same condition as it was when I sent it. I replaced the one on my 24-120mm with a B+W XS-Pro Kaesemann CP filter. It's definitely a superior quality when comparing the construction of both. When I screw it onto the front of the lens, the B+W screws on with more rotations than the Hoya did.

The B+W is very thin - thinner than the Hoya, but the B+W is made better. However, I like the colors rendered by the Hoya better than CP filters by B+W. I used to use B+W CP filters but switched to Hoya for that very reason.

After receiving my repaired filter, I sent an email to Hoya asking about their HD3 CP filter. I specifically asked if the mount used is the same as the one on the HD CP filter. I never received a response. So...I really don't want to take a chance on it.

The Hoya HD CP filter that was repaired went back into a box. The one that is loose is currently on my 300mm lens. Since I don't take it off, I figured it will last longer on that lens than on a lens where I need to remove it.

Good luck with whatever you choose. The B+W is definitely solid except for being a little thin. There is a very slight color difference between the greens/yellows of the Hoya vs. B+W as well as a slight difference between the blues, but those colors get tweaked in Photoshop. Except for the slight difference in colors, B+W is definitely constructed with a higher quality. Good luck with whatever you choose.
