It has been ages since I posted here, work has kept me so busy it is has not left much room for photography. I got a mint condition 105mm f/2.8 AIS Nikkor for about $200. It is a steal, it looks and feels brand new. Like all older AIS Micro Nikkors, it requires extension tubes to get to 1:1 but I have plenty of Nikon PK's to fit the bill if necessary. I put it on the D300 so I had an effective 157mm f/2.8 Micro lens. I shot this amazingly gorgeos 3/4" little arachnid just outside my front door with a tripod, macro focusing rail, D300, lens and my 40 year old Vivitar ring flash. The background was white so the web does not really show up very well, nothing I could do about that. I am already in love with this lens! It gives me double the subject to focal plane distance over 55mm f/2.8 Micro which is a definite advantage when shooting shy little critters!

I have two PK-13's, a PK-11 and a PK-12. Two PK-13's is a little longer then the PN-11.

It appears that her smaller (barely 1/2" long) and somewhat less brightly colored suitor has joined her in the web. I guess they are in the mood for love. And who could blame them? It is the 28th of February and it hit 84º degrees this afternoon in north central FL

Just-Clayton, have you ever tried reversing that 50mm lens? A reversing ring is a very inexpensive accessory and it will increase the magnification even more. However if your 50mm lens does not have an aperture ring you are stuck at maximum aperture. I have a Nikon BR-6 which allows me to work at maximum aperture using a cable release attached to it, then close down to working aperture before you take the image. It works like a champ on my reversed 50mm f/1.4 AI Nikkor mounted reversed on my PB-6 bellows!

I have only been here for a couple of weeks on a 6 month contract at Shands hospital in Gainesville. Before that I was in Lexington Kentucky. And to be honest I have not been on this site much at all in the last 6-8 months and did not even know about it, my loss!

STM,

You do know about Sweetwater Park, LaChua Trail and some of the other localspots, don't you? I was at Sweetwater this past Sunday, and I will be going back in the future! If you run across a photographer named Dick Vautrinot, ask him about some places in the region to shoot. He has posted some great work on another site.

Good luck in Gainesville; will you return to Pensacola, or have you moved on for good?

No, hopefully one day I will go back to P'cola for good. A couple of weekends ago I went out with Greg Stephens, another wildlife photographer in town, and he showed me all of his haunts. I have about 12 bookmarks in the GPS!

Love my AFD 105mm 2.8, yours is the precursor to that one. Nothing wrong with vintage glass in good shape. The latest ain't always the greatest.

Enjoy your new toy.
