R 1 System

I thought about it awhile back. I have a few speedlights and decided to just utilize those in some way rather than have the ring mount R1 system. I've seen so many creative ways that photographers use their regular speedlight that I couldn't justify the cost.

I have been doing some checking and am wondering if my 7000 will trigger the flashes without the SU800. I think the 7000 has a built in commander making the SU800 unecessary. Any thoughts?

I have found in the past the the built in flash on my D600 fails to fire remote flash(es). Put the SU-800 on from my kit and it works every time. It seems to be really powerful and fires them regardless of the receiving sensors position

That's surprising. Was your D600 flash in Commander mode? It has a menu with a very special Commander mode for the system of remote flashes. Whereas, that's all the SU-800 does.

I have no experience with it, but page 50 of the R1C1 manual describes using it with the D70 commander. If it works with a D70 (an elementary commander), it should work with anything. Otherwise, the only thing significant about the D70 is the age... D70 and R1C1 both introduced in 2004, same era. The manual cannot mention cameras newer than it.

I can fire remotes (SB-800s) from both my D7000 and D600 with the pop up flash, but it's a pain to set up and to change settings because you have to dive into the menus. With the SU-800, you control remote settings from the SU-800 by pushing a few buttons (maybe over simplified).

Can you please tell me where to find the commander mode on my 7000. E-mail me private if you want.

Menu E3. Menu there to set the camera internal flash to TTL, Manual, or Commander mode.
Then the Commander menu (there) has the settings for the remote flash (groups A or B).
Important, the internal flash can be also used, or disabled (mode "- -" for that internal group).
Commander will flash commands before shutter opens, but the flash contribution can be disabled, or not.

See Using the Nikon CLS Remote Wireless Flash System for more.

This menu E3 is only about the internal flash, and does not affect any hot shoe flash in any way.
