    Does this work equally as well with digital? I understand that all autofocus features are lost using this apparatus, is that correct?

    Yes... The majority of very close macro photography is done in manual modes because of the complexity of the process... It's generally done with stabilized (mounted/tripod) cameras in manual mode because of the very narrow depth of fields... Lighting is almost always augmented (even special lights) with manual exposure settings because the front elements are so close to the subject that normal lighting is blocked...
