Hello All

My wife just got a job being the photographer for a concert theater and wasn't sure what the best lens for shooting plays and bands would be. I am looking at getting her a good starter lens for this price wise and then once she starts getting more work upgrade the lens. Any help would be greatly appericiated.

Need a lot more information to provide any meaningful help. For example, what camera will she be using? What is the lighting level? How close to the subject can she get? Will she be photographing during rehearsals or a live show? How much freedoom of movement will she have? Etc. etc.

That's gonna be a tough one. So many variables. I don't think you will find a Starter lens that will handle all that she will need in a dimly lit indoor setting. I used to shoot concert photos for a friend's band and generally had a 24-70mm f2.8 and a 70-200 f2.8. neither is cheap or light, but they got the job done.

The lens will need to be an f/2.8 or f/1.8 (best for low light). As to the focal length, that is going to depend on how close she can be, but the aperture will need to be the fore-mentioned.

I know this a late answer but regardless of what you start with, you should aim for a 70-200 f/2.8. If you're not a pro, then go for the Tamron G2
