Darker site than home

drove 10 miles from home with the camera, tripod and 35mm lens.

Set up in a lay-by just out side Southam which isn't heavily light polluted.

Took a few shots but this one i like as i almost caught the flare up on the end of a meteor, not a plane as no flashing across the image due to the longer exposure.

Nice shot, although it appears that there is some extra light on the horizon. I want to attempt this sometime, although I want to try with a shorter focal length to get more of the sky in the shot. I think I'll have to drive more than ten miles to get to spot that dark, though.

Looking forward to seeing more of these posts from you.

You should be able to drive out to Destin and shoot off shore and get some pretty dark sky. Probably not as dark as Canyonland or Arches park in Utah

i live in what was a yellow sky, but it's now white due to all the new warehouses and house that have been built, this is literally just out side Southam, at the dark site you can see the light domes over the big cities of Coventry, Birmingham , Oxford but it doesn't intrude. Thank you all for the comments

Destin is a possibility, but most people around here go west if they can, out to Navarre Beach or so, to get the darker beach skies. One of our biggest problems at the beach, though, is the wind, which causes stability problems and blows all sorts of particles around. There is a fairly dark spot just over the Florida-Alabama line that I'd like to explore, as well.

I am going to be on Dauphin Island for a few days later this month so I plan to try a little night photography and test my theory. The last time I saw dark sky was in Arches National Park near Moab, Utah. That is really dark sky in that part of the USA
