Pawleys Island Beach Sunrise

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

I got up before the sun and went out to the beach, about a 5 minute drive and set up for some sunrise images. I used a 1º Spotmeter to get my starting exposure. I knew I would need at least a 16x graduated ND filter to hold the sky because I wanted to use a long exposure (8 sec) to completly blur the water. As the sun got closer to the horzon, it became apparent that my 16X grad ND was not going to be enough, so I slipped in an additional 8X ND into the holder. The closer the sun got to the horizon, the more the water in the foreground started to wash out. I wound up using a layer mask from earlier exposures and "painting" in the water in the foreground.
