I went on a little "photo safari" today up into the mountains

I headed WNW out of Springerville into the mountains today. I got up to about 9600 feet in places. A lot of the snow is still there, even though the temperatures were hovering around 40.

There are a lot of stands of Aspen up there, especially in the higher elevations. I also came upon some old decrepit barns and houses there and stopped to photograph them. I love to photograph textures on old and weathered wood.

A stand of Aspens, 85mm f/1.4 AIS

An old, abandoned barn. The contrast between the red paint and bare wood was quite interesting and the roof was missing some sheet metal as well

I tried some HDR on that barn but I am kind of on the fence as to whether I like it or not. I am a much more "literal" kind of photographer.

These last two were what really caught my eye. They both make me really wish I had dragged the Hasselblad along with me to Springerville. Of course that would have meant also dragging reels, tanks, thermometers, jugs of chemicals, GraLab and other darkroom stuff not to mention that beast of a Nikon CoolScan LS-8000 scanner, which is about 2 1/2 feet deep

Nice shots. Not sure if I'm ready to see the snow yet though.

It is already here, at least up in the mountains. I did get stuck once but backed up down a small hill onto an area where there was some bare grass and then got up a head of steam and powered my way through it. I have not had to do that in almost 30 years! It is like riding a bike, you never forget, you just get a little rusty. My Jeep is only 2WD and the tread on my tires are getting close to the point where they will be in need of replacement. I am going to pick up some chains this week, because the snow WILL NOT deter me from other "safaris" later in the winter!
