Jake's (Backdoorhippie) HDR Shots

Decided I do enough of these to warrant a thread instead of mixing 'em in the general HDR thread.

Took a walk last week while the NJ winter was hiding behind temps in the 50's. Goal was to climb up a nearby spot where "Superstorm" Sandy leveled an entire hillside of decades old hardwood trees. Straight down from the spot of devastation is a point where several hundred acres of open field converge in a forested corner. This focused the 80mph winds into a jet stream of sorts that went straight up the mountain 80 feet across. I wish I could get a tall enough vantage point to capture it. Nothing to give it perspective, but the largest tree in the first shot is about 4 feet across the trunk.

Thankfully, my walk there was eased by a detour through a local golf course that I play most mornings in the summer. This is one of my favorite spots out there. (Note to self, need to figure out which clubs to remove from the bag so I can fit a tripod some morning)

Thanks, guys. I have at least a dozen different shots of that taken with my iPhone over the summer (I spent the better part of May-September shooting almost nothing but with that). Great little spot. Everything from Wood Ducks to Kingfishers to Green Heron buzz in and out of there every morning.

Here are a few more taken the same day as above. Thought about making a tryptic of them, but I'm waiting to see what else I might drum up between now and then.

The first one is my preferate. Seems to me that the mix of clouds and tree just adds to the drama. Very nice shot Jake!

I know it. I can't afford the 14-24mm f2.8 just yet. This was just one lens and one camera on a walk where I happened to cut across a local course. I've got an 8-16mm Sigma DX, but a full frame would be sweet. The 18-35mm they appear to be announcing isn't quite as wide as I'd like, but we'll see.

Don't know about that, Rocky. I was born and raised there, so this is still just a nice place to visit. Only really hard thing about leaving is the family that's still here.

I'm curious also. With the D600, we can only use whole numbers (I think) and I've been shooting at +- 1 ev.

Darn, you're right Rick. Now is it on my D90 or D7000 that I get this option…D90<.3, .7, 1, 1.3, 1.7, 2; D7000<Same as D90.

With the D600, I shoot 3 exposures with 2 stops in between. With 7000 and 90 1.7.

Thanks for straightening me out Rick.

I only mention it because it is the only annoyance I have about the D600 and was hoping I was wrong :)

I liked doing HDR at 1.7 or 1.5 to reduce blown out highlights from 2.0

Rick, I never noticed that. You get .3, .7, 1.0 and then 2.0.

I'm using +/-2, Marcel.

No Jake, that was me thinking the D600 would give us that option where the D7000 and D90 do have this .3, .7, 1.0, 1.3, 1.7, 2 options with the front wheel while pressing the bracket button.

I understood, Marcel. I'm just saying that I never noticed the D600 was different from my D7000 (which I usually set to +/-2 anyway, which is probably why).

I suppose I was thinking Urbex a bit when I went out to shoot with my new 16-35mm yesterday. Bleak, cold day, and these seemed fitting. I need to do some regular edits on some to really show off the lens (I'm impressed), but here are some shots of an abandoned Paper Factory. I can't find any specific information on it, but its sister plant 10 miles away was shut down by the EPA and is declared one of the worst hazardous waste sites in the state - and in NJ that's saying a lot since we invented the Superfund site. Of course, I didn't find this out until I got home. :-O

I have a few more to do, but that'll need to wait for tonight.
