Why is that? A dangerous area and/or overly zealous law enforcement?

    Post your Train shots!
One of the model trains recently given to me by my friend is this little N Scale jewel that's nearly 50 years old, an Arnold Rapido 0-6-0. When I was a kid, I had one just like it and as kids do, I hopelessly ruined it trying to paint it. It's not a valuable locomotive, but it won a place in my heart long ago and I am thrilled to once again have a perfect replacement. The manufacturer also made matching passenger cars and the set makes a sweet sight around the tree at Christmastime. This locomotive is 5" Long.

Good grief. It's puzzling why grey-haired guys like us carrying cameras are somehow seen as a high profile threat.

I had a guy in a new Toyota truck following me in Fostoria OH not long ago. I walked up to him & asked why he was following me. Turns out he was the yardmaster of the CSX yard there. He was a nice guy & we had a good chat. He did remind me not to trespass & told me he knew I was there since he'd heard a train crew make mention of me taking pictures. Yes they are out there watching us. It would make more sense if they would embrace fans, we could be extra eyes for them. As in see something say something.

Glad they didn't try & bust you for taking pictures of their RR.

I suppose all of us who enjoy rail photography have had incidents with law enforcement, some with good outcomes and others less so. I think in this post 9/11 era, cops are more vigilant than before, thinking they've found the next Bin Laden masquerading as a railfan.

Like crashton, railfans should be tolerated as welcome protection. A few years ago I saw smoke and flame rising from a crack in a mainline crosstie. I looked closer and it was red hot throughout. I'm not sure how it ignited, but the fire was certainly going to delay the next train or worse.

My friend had some bottles of drinking water and I poured a number of them into the tie to extinguish the blaze. Despite my trespass, I'm quite sure I saved NS from trouble and did it all very safely.

    Re: Post your Train shots!

I just recalled a story from when I was a college kid in the late '70s. I was railfanning northwest of Chicago and a nice local cop arrived to say that someone from the railroad had called about me and wanted me gone. Rather than run me off, he first asked if I worked for the railroad. "Yes", I said because I did.

What I didn't say was that I worked for the Santa Fe and that our line was 30 Miles south.

He was pleased, wished me a nice day and drove off. Sometimes the whole truth isn't needed.

    Re: Post your Train shots!

I was walking around the PC Collinwood OH rail yard taking pictures with my trusty Nikkormat one day when the engine switching cars stopped & invited me to climb on board. So I climbed up into that decrepit F7 & spent a few hours riding back & forth across that large yard. He was adamant that I duck down when we passed the yard. What a day it was for that young guy railfan. That young guy with is camera is now an old fart, but has that great memory thanks to that friendly engineer.

Luckily I have more good experiences than bad with railroad workers. But I do realize times have changed & not for the better. So it goes.....
