New Toy

I am a bit late to the D500 party, but better late than never!
My new toy arrived today after selling my all time favourite Canon lens and a Canon body to fund the purchase. I think that should make me a true Nikonite

Congratulations Peter. You aren't as late as I am to the D500 group. Mine is backordered for 2-4 weeks. I'm like a kid waiting for Christmas morning. after Thanksgiving. :D

p.s. I love your Cosmos quote. Is it yours or did someone else say it?

Thanks. It is my own little philosophy based on Carl Sagan's 'star stuff.'

Yeah, the manual is huge, and there are so many things to customize on the D500. I can't remember how I customized my buttons.

I don't know if you are familiar with Steve Perry's Backcountry Gallery, but he has great information on the D500. One thing to be aware of is that Nikon changed the tracking capabilities some. People have noticed (not me) that the dynamic AF modes operate differently on this model. He has an e-book on the focusing system.

Yes I love watching Steve Perry videos.
I have already programmed some of the functions but find that people seem to be split on the best AF selection for tracking birds and wildlife. I am getting the impression that there is a slight preference for GROUP AF.
It would be interesting to know what people on here tend to use in this scenario.

I am lousy at tracking birds. Need to spend some time at the lake just chasing the gulls around.
I don't know what the experienced wildlife photographers are using on here.

I have that same impression, but a lot of folks are using D25 for BIF. I like the joystick button for single point focus for still subjects, but it seems most use the PV button for that.

Group Af on the AFon Button and single point on the press of the joystick is the way to go! Congrats!!!

I have already set the single point to the Af-on button as I don’t like back button focus. I might use the joystick press for an alternative AF eg 25, as I will probably have the camera set at Group based on what everyone is saying.
Has anyone found the larger focus groups of any benefit when shooting BIF?

Oh man, good for you! I'm still hoping to acquire one myself someday. Enjoy, and many happy clicks!

On a completely unrelated note: are you looking to adopt a middle aged American radio announcer, by any chance?

Are you using AF-C?

Yes Andy, AF-C, GROUP and 10 FPS. The shutter won't last long if I keep the FPS at that though
Not getting a proper chance to try it all out due to lockdown restrictions preventing people from travelling to better locations and the weather is typical Scottish March weather...bloody awful:(
