Why are some of photos saving as JTG files?

Hi, I hope somebody can help. My trusty Nikon D70 has done me well for 14 years without any problems but... recently some photos I've taken instead of saving on the card as jpgs have saved as .JTG files! They are also huge, around 60mb each. Some of the files that are also saving as jpg are corrupted. The problem is occurring on different cards as well.

Any idea what's going on? Many thanks for your advice.

Sounds like you have a bad memory card... or more succinctly, a corrupted FAT table on the memory card you have...

edited to add: Opps... sorry... I missed the multiple memory cards...

Welcome aboard. Enjoy the ride.
We look forward to seeing more posts and samples of your work.

Since your issue is occurring on several memory cards, I doubt it is a bad memory card. I would first suggest a camera reset. See https://www.nikonimgsupport.com/ni/NI_article?articleNo=000003758&configured=1&lang=en_US for instructions. If this fails to fix your issue, I would inspect the card slot for bent contact pins. If you have one or more bent pins, it will need to be straightened. Unless you are a skilled electronic technician, I would suggest a trip to the camera doctor.

Welcome to the forum. It could be the contacts or something related to the connections between the card and the camera as has already been stated. Hope you find the solution soon.

Do the images show up on the camera's monitor? Are they shown at JPEG there (DSC1234.JPG)?

Are you connecting the camera directly to the computer, or using a card reader?

Are they .JPG on the camera's card, but .JTG after you transfer them to somewhere else?

Hi everybody, many thanks for your warm welcome - great to find such a supportive community. Also many thanks for your advice, I've gone for the full reset (first time ever!). I'll report back on it's effect...

OK, so this what's happening since re-setting my camera. I've had no problem, so far, with any JTG files being created (HURRRAH!) but... several times the camera has said 'card is not formatted' or 'no data' - it is formatted and has been at least twice recently, also about every 30th image taken is missing half its data and the picture is half grey. Any ideas why it's doing this?

I'd suspect a corrupted card then. Get another and see what happens.

Better yet, buy two. For instance, instead of buying a 64g card, buy two 32g cards. This way, if you end up with a damaged/corrupt card again, you can pop it out and use the second card with minimal loss of shooting time.

Many thanks for your reply. Hmmm, it's happened on two different cards tho. One is about eight years old the other I only got last year. Both are Lexar
