Smugmug have confirmed that they will be keeping their site and Flickr. So it it probably won't be worse. For myself, I'm hoping they improve the iPhone app and maybe put a bit more effort into Group Discussions.

I hope they have a lot of hard disk space.

In 2017 people uploaded into Instagram alone 35 billion photographs. People took about 1200 billion photos during last year and that explains why publications have gone from paying to photographers to actually charging them if they want their images published. Like the US fashion magazine Sheeba that charges $860 if a photographer wants his (her) image in the cover. Also stock photography has been dead about a decade.

'Tis an unholy alliance if you ask me...

SmugmMug and Flickr are both photography related sites, but in my opinion their respective "personalities" could not BE any more different.

The Optimistic Side of me is hoping SmugMug will kick back, let Flickr BE Flickr and not simply cannibalize Flickr's user-base before killing it off. The Cynical Side of me is laughing out loud at my Optimistic Side.

However it pans out I'm even happier now I have Adobe CC so I can start building my own site using Adobe Portfolio... Something I should have started doing a while ago.

I've been a long time SmugMug user (just renewed my subscription for another year, actually) since I traveled the US on a motorcycle with a water proof point and shoot. I'm hopeful the level of service that SmugMug has provided will keep Flickr on a good growth trajectory. It might end up costing some money for a subscription, but I've been happy with them for a long time.
