I don't know if this will be of interest to anyone here, but if you're into tanks, self propelled guns, and other tracked vehicles of the WW-2 era, there's a Japanese anime that might be right up your ally.

DONT LEAVE! Lol...hear me out.

So this anime has a rather goofy premise (as if any anime doesn't). It takes place in a world where a very poplular team sport for highschool girls is "tankery". Girls go around in restored WW-2 tanks and try to knock out the tanks of their opponents (with live rounds!). Each school models itself after a country involved in the war, and uses exclusively that country's tanks and other tracked vehicles.

If you're a tank geek, you'll appreciate the details. The tanks were CGI rendered, including the interiors. Tank historians were consulted to insure accuracy of things like suspension, armor thickness, even the exact dimensions of rounds. Military historians were hired to produce representative battle plans for the fighting sequences. Tanks have famous numbers (the captain of the German themed team commands a Tiger numbered 212 - Michael Wittmann's legendary tank, for instance). And all sorts of other references abound as well.

The anime is called "Girls Und Panzer", and if you watch it the first two episodes are mostly just to set things up with characters and such. But once our heroes get their tanks and begin competing, it really is a lot of fun (if you can suspend disbelief for things like a French Char-Bis doing 50mph, when in reality it probably topped out at 12. Gotta love cartoon physics!)

Here's a fan made vid of the opening song with a number of show clips to give you an idea:

Seriously, it's a lot of fun. If you can get over any knee-jerk negative reactions when you hear the word "anime" (if you have them) I think you'll be surprised how much you enjoy it. Just one thing: watch it with subtitles, not dubbed. It famously has one of the worst dubs in all anime, and that bar is set VERY high.

Thanks for sharing. How did you happen to run across that?

A couple of years ago I had elbow reconstructions surgery and while I recouperating I couldn't do much other than watch videos on my wife's laptop. I was watching some WW-2 fighter plane documentary, and someone in the comments - an actual historian - mentioned that this series would be of interest to any like minded fan. And he was right!
