I didn't realize self-flagellation was still in practice in Catholic communities. I guess I live in a small bubble.

I was in Angeles City for this season in 1985 and saw similar scenes, plus a couple of men who were carrying large wooden crosses on their backs, and had nails through their hands into the cross .
