I’m headed to the Daytona 500 in February and I am not allowed to bring a Tripod or a Monopod. I have the 200-500 and while I can to pretty good handholding, it would be really nice if I could support it someway - any ideas?

Also, if anyone has shot a NASCAR event, I’ll take your tips!

I never have, but from an acquaintance long ago, I got that shooting the 24-hours event there was done at relatively high shutter speeds due to the speed of the cars, at least during the day.

I'd also recommend going out to a speedy roadway and practicing your panning techniques with some relatively slower speeds.

And finally, I'll suggest that you activate your camera's viewfinder grid, if it has one. This should assist you to keep the subject still within the panning viewfinder.

Here is one website with tips: Photography tips for shooting NASCAR & other motorsports There are others as well, all with applicable tips for motorsports photography.

Good luck!

I shoot football like this quite often. My key is making sure I keep my arm up against my rib cage to support the weight of the lens. A bit of weight training between now and then doesn't hurt either.

cheat - get a walking stick and put a quarter 20 stud in the end instant monopod or get get a quarter 20 ring bolt screw it into the base of the camera and attach a long cord which you then step on to steady the camera.

Will you be trackside or in the stands?
Hand holding that best for a length of time will be a challenge.

I havent shot the Daytona yet (Will be doing Le Mans later this year) but I shoot F1 in Catalunya every year.

To start with get the keeper shots, the shots above 1/250th

Then when you have shots you are happy with get creative and play with shutter speeds, this was a shot at 1/20th to see how slow I could get the speed but still get the car sharp,

I probably should have mentioned that I am very comfortable shooting motor sports, auto, motorcycle, rally, pavement, dirt and even snow. I have shot on tracks, mountains, etc. However, I have never been to Daytona and this time I’m a spectator not allowed support.

I’ll be in the stands 4 rows up. I understand I can move around, put again - no support - and as carguy mentioned, holding that beast is going to be a challenge.
