Thinking outside the box

Shot a wedding on Saturday and the light died sooo quickly - there was burning off being done which was causing the light to be darker to start with and it was also the first really cloudy day of our autumn here - which again meant no golden hour.... The shoot didn't start until about 5pm and the light died by 5.20pm

So what did I do? I used what I had with me and what was in my surroundings to make our own sun.

This first shot is my assistant stood to the side just behind the couple, I put enough of the strobe head in to make it look like a setting sun through the trees without blowing it too much...

These next ones I saw a yellow light in the car park behind where we were shooting - this first image is just to show what it looked like, Screen Shot 2017-05-16 at 9.20.14 AM.jpg

so we made our way over and by positioning myself and framing it right, I reckon we got a good likeness for a beautiful golden hour shot.Screen Shot 2017-05-16 at 9.20.49 AM.jpg

This is how dark it actually a few mins later.

There was also a fountain nearby and again just by right positioning and framing, I managed to use the water droplets to create some nice light bokeh. First pic shows the fountain more, 2nd is where we got the effect I wanted.

Even though the shoot light was less than ideal, I was pretty stoked with what I managed to eek out of the location, and more importantly, the couple were stoked!

Talk about making lemon-aid out of lemons! Great job.

Opps, I just realized that being from down under, might not be familiar with the phrase, "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade"

Very familiar with it Biker.. :) Yep - almost had a "holy shit what do I do moment", but managed to make it work.

And another great wedding, Kevin! By the way, I forgot that your country is opposite from ours when it comes to weather. Do you have a lot of winter weddings coming up?

I have a few - 1 per week basically for the next few weeks. Then end of June and July it drops off to 2 per month. August I think I have 3 and then back into it for Sept.. :)

Just out of curiosity Kevin. How long does it take to deliver the final product to your customer once the wedding is over? How do you have time to do processing and everything else that needs to be done, doing a wedding once a week ?

My contract says delivery of images within 8 weeks. Sleep is overrated Pete. :)
